Is he just getting older?

Recently my husband (about a 2 months ago) tore his left hamstring.  He was off work for 2 weeks.  He is a school bus driver and Pee Wee football coach.  During practice, while demonstrating the boys how to stand in a positions.  He he felt and pop in his right calve muscle.  He now is very frustrated and thinks there is something really serious going on with him and his muscles.  Help me out here...........is he just getting older and needs time to heel still and he is babying that left side. or  Do I need to take him to see a doctor or specialist?

Thanks!  I let him read your answer and he felt real good about it (I guess it sounds better coming from someone else than your wife).  LOL  I will call and ask for some therapy and strengthening exercises for him.  Thanks again for your response.

Muscle weakness can be caused by any number of things: age, physical conditin (in shape), and nutrition are just some of the factors that impact muscle integrity. How did your husband tear his hamstring? If it was an actual injury such as falling or someone running into him that resulted in the tear obviously it is less likely it is a physical condition. Did he do phyiscal therapy or strengthening of any kind? When one muscle is injured it affects many other muscles because they pick up the slack of the injured muscle, even if they are of opposite limbs. This is why physical therapy is so important. Going to an orthopedic or sports medicine doctor might not be a bad idea to get some strengthening exercises and rule out any underlying causes. Hopefully it is just age and a run of bad luck! With the proper strengthening exercises and stretches, ice and NSAIDS such as ibprofen he will probably be just fine! Make sure he has plenty protien in his diet and if he doesn't take a multivitamin it may be a good time to start! Hope this helps!
