Actually today my ortho said it's ulnar nerve entrapment in the wrist and the painkiller he gave me was not an opiate. Thanks anyways. Perhaps I should have been a little clearer with my question.
All opiates affect peristalsis in the bowel, and hence produce constipation. Stopping the opiate restores bowel function. It is not unreasonable to prescribe an orad steroid for short periods of time. In some people a steroid can produce headache and sleeplessness, as can the drug combination you are taking. Stopping the meds after five days won't necessarily have any side effects, except for increased pain. Five days on steroids should be enough to reduce the inflamation. Talk to your physician regarding the etiology of the wrist pain, which is often due to a compressed nerve in the cervical area, rather than in the wrist. Wrist pain is due to the fact the wrist is part of a pain dermatome.
