Piriformis muscle question.

WHY is this area debatable? Why is there not enough education about the piriformis muscle which creates A LOT OF PAIN. I found a doctor who has heard of this muscle but why is treatment debatable? I just don't understand why the medical community is ignoring this issue. I have had this ongoing issue for years and usually have to get a RFA (nerve block) but it did not take this time. What are my other options?

I am also 'attempting' to get my pm doctor to talk to my orthopedic surgeon who knows my medical history. I don't know how successful I will be, but a good try is all I can do at the moment and hope they actually pay attention.

Once I get the pain under reasonable control I would like to return to the Pilates exercises I used to do which were helpful. It is just getting this pain under manageable control for me to move forward with. I am doing walking exercises but that is still rough on me but I am doing what I can at the moment. Thanks for the advise and will keep you posted.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there!

While milder forms of pyriformis syndrome can be managed by conservative measures such as stretching exercises, muscle strengthening, anti-inflammatory/ pain medications; severer forms may require steroid/ anesthetic shots. Prognosis is generally good and nerve destruction procedures are seldom used. I would suggest consulting an orthopedician for a detailed evaluation and suggestion of an appropriate management plan.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
