Rib Removal?

I have a loose rib, and it's been causing me sooo much pain for over a year now. I am so fusterated, I just want to get it taken out! Has anybody had a rib removed? Was it severely painful? Does it feel different? How long is the recovery time? THANKS!

Don't remove a childs ribs or do anything with their chest unless it's a life or death situation.  I've been in constant pain in through multiple surgeries because a doctor assured my parents that the procedure was safe and necessary.  It wasn't.  My whole life has been affected.  This will change your childs entire existence.

Be safe.

My father in law had six ribs removed and Gortex-rebuilt placement, also. After the third surgery, they finally removed the Gortex due to the intense pain.

I am 2 weeks post op from having 4th rib re section and gortex mesh put in. I was having pain in my chest and had a series of CT scans, x rays and opinions from multiple doctors. I did not want to go thru with this surgery but was told it was necessary due to the size of the tumor growing out of my rib. The pain in the first week was very difficult, I am a healthy 37 year old woman who has always been very active and fit. I am now feeling a lot better, still in pain but not constant and have faith my body will heal itself slowly. I am taking pain meds but not every day seems to be worse at night but I manage to sleep comfortably. I have read all the posts above and agree on the soft spot, touching my side at end of incision is very tender and gives me a deep chill. I have not gotten results of biopsy back but pray tumor is benign. Keeping good faith in health, Bless

The scans has shown a mass on my 6th rib and the surgeon wants to remove it, I am in pain some days more than others but the worst pain was after flying to Hong Kong then on to Australia, the pain started on my last week in Australia and by the time I got back to Hong Kong I was bad so my niece took me to the hospital where I had scans ect and was advised to see a bone dr on my return.
but after reading all the notes I don't think I want this operation, I am very active and look after my grandchildren, I was offered pain management but said I would go with the op after family pressure, I am managing my pain quite  well so I dont know that I want to put myself through all this pain and it does not sound like the 3 to 5 days recovery time that the consultant said it would be, I am seeing the consultant on the 28th Nov next week so very confused just now

In 2007 I had my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th ribs removed due to a neurofibroma tumor.  They also removed all muscle on the right side of my back.  The tumor was benign, but I live in constant pain everyday.  And, that's even with taking narcotic pain meds.  I've also lost alot of the use of my right arm.  I also had the gortex mesh for recontruction.  Without those ribs I have no support for my shoulder and the weight of my arm pulls the shoulder down.  Sometimes the pain is unbearable.

I'm 28 yrs old.  Back in 2007 lost 3 ribs and part of my lung tissue due to fibrosarcoma. No post chemo or radiation. Still going thru blood work and scans every year as precaution. Had the mesh in to substitute for missing ribs.  I was in hospital for about 2 weeks, sent home stay there for about another 3 weeks waiting for the drain to close.   Dr.  said when they opened me up various nerves were compromised and removed everything he saw as a threat therefore I lost feeling to left side of my torso.  My pain level has always been minimal (I'm guessing since I lost feeling to that particular area) with exception when humidity is high. On those days I feel like something is being pulled from inside me but pain is still bearable.  I'm sorry to hear everyone is dealing with so much pain.  Dr.  also recommended that I exercise and put on some muscle weight for "extra" protection as he called it. I wish everyone the best and that we stay cancer free.  God bless you.
