Should I or shouldn't I

I am a 63 year old Diabetic with a not so prominent bunion and hammertoe. I have been seeing a Podiatrist for the past year for various problems including a now healed ulcer on great toe, and have had both large toenails removed for chronic ingrown nails and fungal thickening. Now he suggests I have the bunion removed. I have neuropathy of both feet and ankles and have no pain associated with the bunion. I am leery of having surgery if not absolutely necessary due to healing problems and possible infections. Do you believe I could do without this surgery ?
