Sternum soreness

I am an 18 year old female and I excercise about 3 times a week. Recently i have pain when palpting the area just below my sternum. It is painful to inhale deeply and sometimes it is too painful to sleep on my side. The pain lessens as the day goes on but returns stronger in the morning. I can not recall any impact injury which would have caused this. Any ideas?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

It can be due to any injury during your exercise or a fall or blow to your chest in the recent past.

It can also be due to a chest muscle sprain or a rib injury.

Avoid physical activity for a week and apply ice packs and take ibuprofen.

If the pain continues then follow up for an X-ray and consult an orthopedician.

Take care!

It could be that you have sprained the muscle attachments of the rectus abdominus muscle.  (the one that is called the six back)
It grows from the pelvis and attaches at the top of pubic bones up to the sternum and ribs
Lay off the sit ups for a few days or more and see if it helps
