Torn meniscus????

7 months ago I was playing soccer with my daughter and came down on my leg wrong. I felt immediate pain in my left knee for days. Went to the Orthopedic doctor, who was suspicious of a torn meniscus as the X-Ray didn't show anything. I returned to the doctor a few weeks later after an MRI. The doctor said no tear was seen but you could clearly see a non-displaced fracture in my fibula. He gave me a cortisone shot, pain meds, told me to rest and it would heal in about 10 weeks.
It felt better for a few weeks, but never really got better. I went to urgent care about two months ago and explained the situation. The PA I saw said it probably stress fractured again and I would always have issues with that knee. Well, I'm certainly not ok with that answer and have scheduled a follow up with the same orthopedic doctor.
I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar. I am convinced the MRI missed something torn. I have twisted, sprained and injured pretty much everything you can imagine growing up and it's always gotten better. This has been 7 months and today it feels like the day after it happened. I have constant pain on or around the lateral side of my left knee. The back of my knee always feels extremely swollen and causes significant pain. Now I'm even feeling pain on the other side of me knee. My knee constantly feels weak. I am forever limping around and I think that is causing my hip to hurt. I'm chewing around twelve Motrin a day and its not really helping, in fact I'm afraid I'm tearing my stomach lining up. Flexeril doesn't help and I can never really get comfortable at night, so my sleep has been all over the place for months. I'm to the point were something has to be done, it's been 7 months. I just know something isn't right and I'm wondering what your thoughts are before I see my doctor. I've been doing a lot of research on line and everything I read about lateral meniscus tears sounds identical to what I'm experiencing.. Thought anyone?? Thanks for reading..

Hi there!

Well, without an evaluation it would be difficult to identify the cause of knee pain in your case. Possibilities that may need to be considered include chondromalacia patellae, tendonitis, bursitis, fractures, patellar dislocation, injuries to the internal knee ligaments/ menisci, infections/ inflammations, arthritis, cyst formation, bone growths/ tumours, neuro-muscular causes, referred pain from other regions etc. An MRI would rule out most structural injuries, while recent injuries/ inflammation is still a possibility to be considered. I would suggest consulting an orthopedician for an evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
