I am a 44 year old woman with a history of neck and back pain. X-Rays were confirmed by several docs that I have a 6th lumbar vertabrae with partial sacralization. Four years ago I began having a new dull lower back pack that shot down my left leg and around my hip. If I walked too much it actually felt like my back was going to give out and I'd fall. Bending down to put on a boot, I felt a "pop" and I experienced a shooting pain in my back and down my left leg. When I tried to stand, my leg gave out. My husband took me to the chiropractor in INTENSE mind-blowing pain. Everywhere they touched me hurt. It was the most unbearable pain I've ever experienced. (And I've had 3 children). Without doing an MRI, the chiropractors made the assumption that I had a bulging disc and they could get me back into shape. I was due to go on vacation the next day, so I went to my MD who gave me muscle relaxants and pain killers. I laid on my back for a week in Mexico and when I returned I was about 50%. With about two more weeks of chiropractic care, I was back to normal.
I experience constant back pain which for the most part I can live with. I do however, have massive pain if I garden, rake, vaccuum or do anything that puts a strain on my lower back. I am a very active individual and I can't accept the fact that I will have this disabling pain for the rest of life which only seems to be worsening. I usually end up "on my back" unable to work for a week out of the year.
Is this something that can/should be treated with surgery?
