I'm 43 years old and at the age of 11 I had been diagnosed with scfe on my left hip, which resulted in 3 weeks of traction followed by surgery,  where I had 3 pins fitted, which removed 4 years later,  the rotation on my left hip is very poor, I can't ride a bike, and while sitting upright on a chair,  my left left goes inward so my left foot tucks behind my right leg, although I lead a normal life, I am plagued with pain on and off, I have one daughter and giving birth was horrendous,  resulting in severe hip pain for months after, over the years I've had xrays and apparently I have severe arthritis on my hip, it's only due to the fact that I'm very active that im not completely crippled by it, I've swam, and power walked for years, attempted jogging but found this too forceful to my hip resulting in stiffness and pain during get the night and next day, no matter what exercise I do, I get pain, 7 months ago I have taken up weight training,  bodypump and kettlercise,  my legs muscles are certainly stronger and in some ways the arthritis pain seems to have eased, I especially enjoy kettlebells,  but recently I've developed a pain when I bend,  under the left buttock, can't tell, if it's the bone or not, my alignment is twisted and I squat at an angle, ive checked with my GP if it's safe for me to use kettlebells and he said yes, i know I will eventually need a hip replacement,  is there any one who also uses weights?  The max weight I use is 12 kilos,  but swinging a 10kilo bell is demanding, but no impact,  as such!
I'd like to know really If weight training is actually helpful or detrimental to people with this problem,  ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jazzlady178
How are you doing with your weight training and hip mobility these days? I just found this forum and am interested in hearing stories of others as I am now 24 and had my right hip pinned at 11. I too do weight training and have read some horrible stories on this effecting people's mobility later on in life..

Hello, many thanks for your reply,  I have since seen my GP and he says it's okay for me to use weights,  I am increasing the weights I use gradually, so far so good, I think I'm going to have to see how I feel as I go along, the kettlebells allow me to swing with a momentum which does take the strain away from if I was using standard free weights, I think I'm going to carry on and hope for the best,  thankyou again for your reply

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there!

Well, it is difficult to comment specifically on the situation without knowing the relevant clinical details. I would also suggest avoiding comparing your case with others, since the clinical presentation/ grading/ current situation may be different. While exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip are typically advised, excessive stress could further deteriorate the condition. The best advice is hence sought with your treating orthopedician.
Hope this is helpful.

Take acre!
