I agree with all of the other comments you will not know until the results are back. They should have done a CA125 and even that is not always reliable but is a good tumor marker. Life does go on for each of us and while cancer is an enemy there are blessings even in this journey. I hate the word cancer so refer to it as the Amalekites. If you know the Bible you will understand why I call it the Amalekites. Your mom needs you now more than ever before. We will pray that this is negative, but if it is not, you will be her support and she will need all of the love and encouragement she can get. It is a tough journey but it will be esier with the support of her family. Cancer can not control you - you must fight and control the cancer. Know that I will be praying for you and your mom and hopefully when you have time you can give us a report on everything. Don't ever forget that you are not alone. Blessings, warrior2007
What kind of results will she have? What tests have they taken?
If, they suspect cancer, PLEASE, seek the opinion and advise of a GYN/Oncologist...they are the experts.
Now as Irene has said, MOST ovarian cysts are benign.
I too know many women who are long term survivors...stage 3B - 22 years.....stage 4 going on about 6 years....I, myself, stage 1A....11 years next week.
As for being the perfect patient....there is no test or early detection for ovarian cancer...there is no way of detecting cysts on the ovaries though a normal gynocological exam.....cysts, depending on the size and location can sometimes be found during a recto-vaginal exam, which unfortunately, not all gynos perform. Sonograms are not part of a regular exam, so, most cysts, masses, tumors are not detected until there are other symptoms. That is why education of the signs and symptoms and encouraging everyone to know and understand their bodies and advocate for thier own health is so important. As for the size of the mass....totally irrelevant...large or small can be benign. I have several large masses....only one was found to be cancerous.
There is an old saying, try not to waste a good panic. If and that is a big IF your mom is diagnosed, we will help you and her through it....it won't be an easy battle, but, it can be won.
Let us know.
Pam
A couple of positive stories here:
I'm post menopausal, probably like your Mom, and they found a large cyst on my ovary. The mentioned the possibility of cancer, even said they'd have an oncologist on hand for my surgery. Not what I wanted to hear. Had the surgery, a 10 cm cyst, my ovary and tube removed but no sign of cancer. Whew!
I have a friend who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 10 years ago. She's still on chemo but is going strong. She travels, goes walking with friends a couple times a week, is involved with so many things. So having cancer doesn't mean life will be over in a year. There's still hope of many years to enjoy in spite of the beast.
According to statistics over 90% of ovarian problems are not cancer. Hang onto that thought and we'll keep you both in our thoughts and prayers. I'm not sure what results she'll be getting but only a biopsy will tell her for sure.
