Endometrioma and laparatomy..

Hello everyone I was recently diagnosed with a 10 cm (Is now 8.4cm) and 4cm cyst which could be hemorhaggic or endometrioma and possible endometriosis. I was referred to a gynecologic oncologist to have a cystectomy. I had a Ca-125 and it came back 190. Three weeks later I had a repeat and it came back 110. The problem is that he wants to do a laparatomy versus a laprascopic surgery. I asked him why and he said because of the size and because he would not be able to take it out of a tiny hole. I am having my surgery soon and I am so nervous. What should I buy? What should I take to the hospital with me? I am also upset that I was only given a consultation appointment and no pre op! They just told me I would get a call from the nurse and a packet in the mail!  I have seen regular obgyns who have told me they could do laproscopic surgery. The problem is that I have heard that many complex cases end up being switched to laparatomies because of endometriosis. Please I need advice.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Not sure what to say on the laparoscopic versus laparotomy / open. There are trade-offs to each.
The good thing is you said the oncologist plans to do a cystectomy so at least he plans to save your ovary. Unfortunately, far too many surgeons remove the ovary when they should just cut out the cyst. Our ovaries are so important our whole lives for hormone production and every aspect of health.
If there is a possibility of cancer (although VERY FEW ovarian cysts are cancerous), I believe a large incision is better to stage it. Plus if they "chop up" the cyst to remove through a small incision, they could spread the cancer. They may be able to put in a specimen bag to reduce this risk but I don't know much about that. But again, chances are slim that it is cancer if you don't have a family history.
When is your surgery? Be sure to read the consent form carefully and modify as needed to state your wishes (e.g. cystectomy vs. oophorectomy). Hope all goes well! Keep us posted.

Awww you poor thing!
I'm 2 weeks from my open surgery
My cyst was so big and was complex that they had to cut big..
I was in hospital for 3 nights..and they took out my right ovary.
I feel so much better now as I did wake up from a huge rock lump in my gut.

Peppermint tea helps with ya bowl movements
Use a towl to hold over the area as your gonna feel really weird.
They give ya pain killers throught the whole stay at the hospital..
But small walks each day around the house really helps :)
I've still got 4 more weeks without work..driving
So I'm kinda going crazy doing nothing from soo much physical activity.
Any questions please ask :) I'll answer as best as I can !
Good luck! :)
