Just had 12cm cyst removed

I just had surgery on March 4th to remove a 12cm ovarian cyst that was located in front of my uterus and another cyst that was impacted in my left ovary.  They had to remove the left ovary as a result and it was done laparoscopic and by c-section.  Today is a week since the surgery and I am still very swollen in my abdomen.  Is this normal?  I went into the surgery with a flat stomach and now it's hanging over the incision and looks like I just gave birth.  If this is normal does anyone know how long the swelling will last?  I have been drinking tons of water to flush out my system but I haven't seen any improvement.  Is there something I could be doing more to remove the swelling?  it's very uncomfortable.  Thank you.

thank you so much for you comments, I feel a little more relieved.  I was hoping it would have been a couple of days but obviously was wrong.  thanks again for your feedback

Give it a couple of weeks.  That swelling is all the internal parts reacting to the surgery and it takes time for it to calm down and heal...as well as the gas.  I had the same thing.  Now my belly/waist are smaller than pre-surgery!

Hi Izzy,

I've heard that people do get quite bloated and swollen from the carbon dioxide they use to inflate your belly during surgery (it helps them see what they are doing down there). It's recommended that you walk around to help your body expel the CO2. My experience would be different from yours -- when I had my c-section I was pregnant and so my belly was already gigantic to start! -- BUT, I do know that my muscle tone has been different near my incision ever since the c-section, and I am very active / fit. If you are truly concerned and uncomfortable though you really should give your doctor a call... Best of luck!
