Can dermoid cysts come back??

When I was about 18 weeks pregnant I started having the pain and ended up in the ER and they couldn't figure out what it was about a month and a half later they found out it was dermoid cyst on my right ovary. I ended up having surgery at 25 weeks pregnant to have it removed because it was getting so large. It ended up being the size of a fist. I am 23. My question is every where I have looked it doesn't say anything about the likelyhood of them coming back. Does anyone know if you can get more? The one I had removed was about a year ago. I am starting to experience the same symtoms and have an appointment but have been researching to see if you can get them more than once. Anyone know??

I am sorry for your troubles. Odd that this cyst has "hung around" all this time and not gotten bigger or smaller! I understand your concern about having surgery. Is the surgeon going to remove just the cyst (cystectomy)? You don't want to lose your ovary since that can disrupt ovarian hormone production and we need our ovaries' hormones our whole lives for every aspect of health.

I have a simple cyst on my right ovary, about 7cm in size, for 2 years now. but it is not causing any pain. Have surgery scheduled for next week. Having doubts about the surgery, since it can come back. Then there is no point of having it remove. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had surgery 2 months ago.  I went in to the ER with the worst pain ever. I had several visits to the ER with countless ultrasounds with no answers.  Finally i had a CatScan and they found I had a cyst the size of an egg. I lived with pain for a month because my Dr. said it shouldnt hurt it was only 4cm and they usually dont cause pain until about 6 or 7 cm.  I was angry that I had to live in pain so I kept on my Dr. a moth later i went in and it had grown to 7cm the size of a large orange. She called me that morning with the results and I had surgery that night.. Now it has only been two months but the pain tha originally sent me to the hospital has returned. Could my Dermoid cyst have come back?

Hi! I am 36 but did have a dermoid cyst at age 31 which my doctor found during my c-section of my first child. I had no symptoms that I know of.....but did have a 12 lb. baby!  My cyst was the size of a tennis ball and had to be removed along with my left ovary (due to to the cyst overtaking the ovary). Anyway, at age 34, I became pregnant the first month we tried, which surprised me since I only had one functioning ovary. One is enough apparently!  If I were you (and I know this is easy to say if I'm not going through the same thing you are...), I would focus on the baby you have (I'm not sure if that one was your first, but I believe it is.) and my own health as far as exercise, eating healthy, and thinking positively.  I hope this information can help you. (as far as a dermoid cyst growing again, I'm not sure of the chances, etc.)

They can come back.  I've had several, one was removed along with my right ovary.  I had a hemmorhagic cyst removed in September, and now I have another one.  I go back in February to see if it has grown.
