catheterization / cauterised nerve

I am to attend pain management clinic to have a nerve catheterization / cauterised. I had to have my coccyx removed due to an accident and still have acute pain in the area, mainly to the right. Had injection which gave me a few days relief.
My concern is that how do they know its a nerve and is there any chance of it causing more problems, what are the risks?

At the same time I had two injections in my lumber spine (several disc's damaged) which gave me 10 days relief, but my consultant has told me there is nothing else he can do with the lumber injury, he mentioned fusing the problem , but said it would only cause problems further up my back. This seems to me as a giving up, there must be something else to be done?

I am seeing a spinal consultant, I do see my GP regulary as I am on varsious medication since my accident. My GP seems to think that this is the right course of action and the pain management clinic will check themselves to see if  cautrising is the best way forward. I think maybe I will wait to see what the suggest.

Do you see a PM doctor or is this your regular family doctor? If it's your family doctor, i would get a referral to a PM, or if its a PM, get your family doctor to refer you to a different one. If you've tried everything, the least they should be able to provide medication management. Good luck to you.
