Question

I started with pain management due to chronic back pain from laminectiomy with fusion and rods. I also suffer with hip pain and leg pain. My doctor started me on Methadone and Norco prn for breakthrough pain. I tried the Methadone and it made me feel terrible. I am only taking the Norco and I am worried that when I go back and they urine test me and I dont have the methadone that he will dismiss me. What should I do? Should I go ahead and call and tell him I am having trouble taking the methadone or what? I know how very picky they are.  Any suggestions?

Thanks guys. I think I will just go ahead and at least try to take half a pill daily to have it in my system and when I go back on the 28th I will discuss it with him. Yes, I do take more of the hydrocodone than I should. It isnt that I want to abuse them or try to get high it just isnt long acting and they help enough with the pain that I dont feel messed up. I hate that feeling of feeling so sedated. I have taken the hydrocodone for years since my fall. Thanks again and I will talk to him.

Hi HessyKat,

You are always welcome here on MH's Pain Management Forum.

I always recommend honesty. It's important that you tell your PMP that you are not taking the methadone. You are not the only person that has had a problem with this medication. Our systems are all different.

My concern is that you did not tell your PMP initially when the problems began with the Methadone. Now you have to back up and be honest.....or you may lose your physician completely.  I too have read your posts and understand that you have true chronic pain and a problem taking your narcotics as prescribed. I wish I had a great answer for you, I am sorry that I don't.

Please talk to your PMP. Honesty is thee only way.

I hope you will keep in touch with us and let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Best of Luck,
~Tuck

Hi HessyKat,

First I want to welcome you to the Pain Management Forum and let you know that we are glad you found this Forum. I want to let you know that there are NO Doctors on this Forum only CP - Chronic Pain - Patients that help each other with our OWN expertise and experiences that we have developed through our OWN CP Issues.

I'm REALLY sorry that you are having all of these problems!  I KNOW how difficult it is to have pain and not be able to take the pain meds that the Doctor is giving you!!  I feel SO bad for what you are going through!  :{

I'm very concerned as I've read ALL of your other posts on the Addiction Forum.  You may have a REAL problem with the Norco as you said that you are taking more than you are supposed to.  How many are you ACTUALLY taking as this will determine whether or not you will have a problem with your Doctor? :{  I'm hoping that we can give you some sort of an answer as to just what type of problem you MIGHT have when you go see him. Then we can see what you need to do about the Methadone.  :)

Looking forward to your update..........Sherry  :)
