MS Contin Not helpung pain

Greetings everyone,

So this morning I went to my first Pain Management appointment. I had been taking Norco for 5 months and Endocet for one month. My pain doc decided that MS Contin would help my with my cronic shoulder pain. He told me that I shall take it once every 8 hours and it should work around-the-clock. He also prescribed me Robaxin as a muscle relaxant and reffered me to a special physical therapy session.

Endocet was great for my pain, but recently started having no effect. That's when I was referred to Pain Management. When My pain started getting really bad I took the MS Contin pill and 5 hours later, I feel no pain relief.

Just wondering MS Contin not having any effect on my pain is normal? What can I do about this? What should I tell my Pain Management doctor. He told me to call him if I have any concern about the medication. Thank you guys very much in advance.

Hi Alexis and welcome to the pain management community.

MS Contin (Extended release morphine) takes awhile to build up in your system.  It is originally scripted as a 12 hour pill so taking it every 8 hours will provide you an overlap of 4 hours where you will be getting a double dose.

I would give the morphine at least a week to build up in your system and then at a minimum a month of use before you decide that the medication is not helping.  You may simply need a stronger dose or you may be one of those people that don't metabolize morphine well.

Please update us on how you are doing.  Take care.

Yes you may have a med that for whatever reason does not effectively work for you.

I am a rapid metabolizer so anything that has ER is useless for me.

Contact your doctor to look into other options.
