Medication and the Organs

My dad takes oxycodone 15mg/ oxycontin 20mg/ marinol 2.5mg/ and ibuprofen 220mg  Marinol is synthetic marijuana and it is doing wonders for his back pain. But if this is the case then shouldn't he theoretically be able to go off of the oxy's? I am so confused. Doctors don't tell me about liver or kidney protection and that is one of my first concerns.

The Oxycontin 20mg is a long acting medication that is taken usually twice a day, the oxycodone is an immediate release medication for fast relief of breakthrough pain. Its very common to be prescribed both a long acting med and a short acting med.

The Marinol, i would say is more for the nerve pain, which is probably why he is still on the oxy meds.

I hope that helps some. Good luck!

Yes the oxys r both the same thing so don't get why he's on two kinds and doses and yes they can affect his kidneys and liver over time. But long use like alcohol.

Does your father have Hepatitis C? I'm not entirely sure what you are asking but it sounds like the question is two fold. You can easily read the renal effect of these meds & how they are metabolized on line. I would talk to your father's doctor about the pain management strategy your father is following.

Pain management is complicated and knowing the reason why your father is taking the meds he is prescribed as well as the long-term goals and effects seems like something you have a right to ask about.
