What can I do for stomach pain resulting from medication?

My stomach is really sensitive to some medications (antibiotics, even some over the counter stuff), but unfortunately, I don't usually know what meds will bother me until I take them. When I do take something that bothers my stomach, the pain is really intense and it can take hours to go away. Pepto-bismol and tums don't help me at all in these cases. I'd like to say that I'll just make sure I'll never take a medication again that bothers me, but I think that's unlikely. Does anyone else have this problem and is there anything that can be done?

One thing that helps me is to take the meds on a full stomach... this really ***** timing wise but it really helps with stomach problems caused by meds.

Hi Mrssoandso,

Welcome to the MedHelps's Pain Management Forum. I am glad you found us but sorry to hear about your stomach issues.

I have a very "touchy" stomach. Before I saw a gastroenterologist I too had the same problems you do. I was diagnosed with severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. I take Prilosec once, sometimes twice a day, under a physicians guidance and order. I rarely am bothered by medications or foods I take now.

However I want to caution you that you should have your stomach issues evaluated. You could have a ulcer or some other condition that needs medical attention. So I strongly suggest that you make an appointment to see a gastroenterologist or you own primary care physician.

Good luck to you. I am hopeful that you will let us know how you are doing. Take care, Tuck
