Pain in the area that you describe that is not associated with eating doesn't necessarily rule out all Gastrointestinal issues but it may limits them.
Thank goodness you are still able to function, play golf, work etc. However that doesn't mean you should ignore your body's signal to you that something is not right.
Our stomach is located in the left lower part of our ribcage. It extends into the small intestine under which begins near the lower portion just below our ribcage. You can experience heartburn anywhere along that line. It doesn't have to be located exactly in the throat, mid-sternum or stomach.
Besides heartburn or Gastrointestinal Reflux there are other conditions that can effect the area. Could this be pain from the Diaphragm? The diaphragm is the important muscle that helps in the proper functioning of respiratory system. It is the major muscle that separates the abdominal cavity from the thoracic cavity. Cause of diaphragm pain include obesity, lifting heavy weights or can occur from a severe, high intensity cough. Constipation can even cause pain in this area. I assume you have not experienced an injury to the area.
It could be from an organ on either side of your lower ribcage and just feels or radiates across the entire area. One thing for certain is you need to consult your PCP. There are so many conditions that could account for this pain that I cannot provide you anymore then some general guesses..... and that is not what's best for you.
Please make an appointment to have this pain clinically evaluated. If it is something serious the sooner it is treated the better the prognosis and/or outcome. Our livers, gallbladder and other major organs are located in that general area.... Please get this checked out.
I will look forward to your updates... and No you are not too busy to see a physician. Because you are so busy living and enjoying life it's even more important that you make the time to take care of yourself. Best of luck.

Hi Fred,
Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us and posted. I am sorry to hear you are experiencing pain.
Can you please provide additional information? When did this pain begin? Is it associated with eating? What makes it better and what if anything makes it worse?
Burning pain is usually indicative of a nerve(s) involvement. Being bilateral (both sides) is a bit puzzling..... unless you are saying that this pain covers your entire upper abdominal area?
I'll look forward to hearing more from you and a better description of your pain and its location.
Take Care,
~Tuck
