That's terrible they wouldn't taper him down.  It's common knowledge that it needs to be tapered, even if it doesn't happen often.  The risk is still there and I think it would be foolish to take that chance.  Did he have underlying conditions?  It is an anti-seizure medicine and as such, it's a serious medication.  I've had a few bad experiences with being in the hospital as well.  Some of it probably bordered on negligence.  I always think when you're hospitalized you really need a friend or family to be present as often as possible.

A friend of mine was visiting a friend of hers in the hospital who had been taking the higher doses of Neurontin.  For some reason, the doctors in the hospital wouldn't give him the Neurontin at all.  I don't know how much he was taking, but it was definitely not good to go from the higher dose to none.  Tapering down would've been better for the poor man.  He went through withdrawal seizures the whole time he was hospitalized.  That sounded so cruel to me for a hospital to do something like that when he was already in the hospital for some other reason.  This withdrawal only extended his misery and his hospital stay.  I really don't understand why hospitals don't listen, but in my own case they wouldn't listen about my being gluten intolerant when I was hospitalized the last time either.  So, I know that hospitals still do what they want with people, rather than really practice the Hippocratic Oath.

I don't believe Neurontin is addictive in the sense that narcotics can be addictive.  I know they advise to taper off it but I believe that's to prevent seizures (though two of my doctors have said they've never seen it happen, though it could.)

Looking up the side effects is a good idea as there are so  many, common and uncommon. I had trouble with it as far as it made me feel out of it.  That eventually went away.  When my dose was increased, though, I had different trouble with it.  It would cause my vision in one eye to fade to black and at the same time I'd get a pretty severe tremor in my left hand/arm.  It only lasts about 30 to 60 seconds but it was pretty frightening.  I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor about whether to continue it or not.  I did go back to the lower dose until I hear from her.  I'm not sure that it helped my pain all that much but a lot of people get pretty good relief from it.

Neurontin (aka: gabapentin) is generally used to treat seizures and neuropathic pain. It's most obvious side effect is sedation, and due to what it does to the brain, this effect is virtually unavoidable at therapeutic doses. Other common effects include sleepiness, dizziness, lack of concentration, and reduced reflexes. You can find complete site effect lists on web sites like rxlist.com

Neurontin is generally a very safe, well-tolerated med that has few drug interactions. But there are people, myself included, who find the sedation to be too much, even at very low doses.

All I know is that the higher doses of Neurontin are dangerous and even addictive.
