Tramadol management, is it even possible?

I've been taking tramadol for a few months for pain and it's already showing it's addictive qualities.  Therefore, I'm getting off it and trying something else.  It took about a month to start to notice the addiction part (take more now, sooner and sooner or you'll feel crappy till you do...).  It then took about 4-5 days to get over the withdrawals after tapering down.  I waited another few days while taking something else (which has kind of crappy side effects but it's what I've got at the moment) and then started with the tramadol again (unfortunately it's effective with the pain relief).  It only took about 5-6 days before I started to notice the addiction part starting to kick in again instead of the month.

So, how long before it's really all out of my system?  I've read that tramadol is out of your system in a few days (half life formula thingus) but your body will crave it for longer during withdrawals and such.  Also read that it's in your system for 20 days or even 30 days.  I'm not finding anything really reliable in my searching to answer how long before tramadol is completely out of your system and will allow an occasional use for a few weeks or so before it's starting to grab you again.

My hope is to have a few different types of pain meds and use each of them for only a few weeks at a time (I have some longer term pain management I need for about a year or so).  Then again, is rotating them even a good idea?

I tried Tramadol for about a year, but it did nothing for my pain, so I quit taking it one day. However, I did not have any type of withdrawls nor did I tell my doctor I quit taking it.

I am strange however, Ibuprofen 800 works will for me.
