need help concerning methadone for chronic pain

I am wanting to go off methadone even though it controls my pain.  I have read horror stories concerning the drug and the weight gain I have experienced since I started this drug a year and a half ago has been 30 pounds.  I have never abused the drug.  I usually have a few pills left over each month because I do not take them as long as I can stand the pain.  Automobile accidents have did a number on my back and neck.  I do receive facet blocks in both my neck and back.  I also receive  epidural in my back.  All of these procedures help but the pain is always there!

I have gastritis so anything that has ibuprofen is out of the question. Can anyone suggest a drug to control pain other than the methadone?  To give you an idea of my pain, some days I could crawl up in the fetal position and cry (if I would let myself).  I have been through the antidepressants, muscle relaxers, and (medicines for seizures which are to help nerve pain).

I have did the physical therapy, water aerobics and everything makes the pain worse.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful.  God bless

I would look into Opana (oxymorphone). It's long acting, but very expensive.

Hello Eyesonthesky,

Welcome to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. Please forgive my tardy response.  I am glad that you found us but sorry to hear about your dilemma. We can relate. The journey through chronic pain is a tough one.

I don't have any medication suggestions for you. I believe this decision must be between you and your physician. However you may want to consult your pharmacist. We so often overlook their expertise. They have a wealth of knowledge and information.

There are horror stories about methadone, but there are also horror stories about most major opiates. If it is successful in managing your horrid chronic pain the pros may out weight the cons. I cannot imagine trying to struggle through my days without the aid of pain medications. I would be bed-ridden. I certainly don't want that for you.

However there are other opiates available that you may find less frightening. Please discuss your options with your prescribing physician. I hope you will find a medication that you are more comfortable with taking. I will look forward to your updates.

Best of Luck to You,
~Tuck
