morphine pain pump

I had the pain pump surgery in april. It has morphine and a numbing agent in it and can give myself an a extra dose every 4 hours. Having problems with severe sweating asked doctor about changing the meds in it  and he said i would have to go into detox for 6 weeks. Does anyone know if this true? The pump was mainly for my spine and doesnt help much with other areas. Was on oral pain meds for 15 years and now have nothing for break thru pain. Is this the way they usually do it? Was my understanding that i would still be on some oral pain med for break thru pain but now he refuses to give me anything. I still have days were the pain is so severe i cant get out of bed.

I asked about switching to a different medication due to the side effects from the morphine. Doctor said i would have to go thru detox to even switch it out. Dont get me wrong i love the pain pump i just dont like the  side effects from this one medication. I havent even tried any of the others that he could use in it that wouldnt have the side effects i am having now. This was my last resort to when the pain became so bad that i could no longer walk. With it i,m walking and doing more. I have had the nerve blocks and trigger point injections and surgeries and pretty much every other option you can think of, Have been dealing with this for over 15 years now . Thanks for your replay am going for a 2nd opinion in nov.

Reading your post does not give me enough information about why your doctor recommended detoxing. Some one put you on the pain pump for a reason and now they want to take you off of it? I have degenerative joint disease/disk disease and the pain pump was an option along with the spinal cord stimulator but these were/are a last resort for me as I have been on many drugs to control the pain. Morphine has many side effects and maybe your doctor is seeing some side effects which could be 'an answer' that is not being mentioned here. I know the opioid's did not work for my pain. Nerve blocks helped but remember the nerve does grown back over time.
At any rate find out more information about what this doctor is doing and get a second opinion about what is happening here. Remember the medication will cloud your judgment and screw with your minds thinking. Your doctor may want you to detox for a reason. Find out why and post what you have learned and then maybe this board can make some sense of these answers. Good luck...!
