I had a TAH with staples.  They were removed a week or so after surgery.  The "swelly belly" can happen with either the open or vaginal hyst and duration depends on the individual.  My abdomen was swollen for a good 3 months.  Body mass index and muscle tone make a big difference.

You also have to remember that a whole lot of surgical work was done inside and the body takes a looong time to recover.  Generally 2-4 weeks for a vaginal hyst and 4-6 for an open hyst just to start feeling human again.  Really good nutrition and extra calories will help speed the healing process.  Since you've had some extra repair work done it may take a bit longer.  Your doctor should be able to give you a more precise timeline.  Meanwhile, take it easy and eat!  :-)

When I had my appendix out my stitchs went away after about 2-3 weeks. I know the stitches they put in your mouth I don't know if they are same but those also took 2-3 weeks to dissolve.
I wish you the best

Hi Purpleprincess,

I wouldliketo Welcome you to the Pain Management Forum and let you know that  I'm glad that you have found our Forum. I need to let you know that there are NO Doctors on this Forum ONLY CP (Chronic Pain) Patients that help each other by using our OWN expertise and experiences that we have accumulated thru our own Pain  conditions.

I, too, have had a Total Hysterectomy but mine was thru the Abdomen. I would imagine that the stitches would take just about as long as they did with childbirth. I'll be PERFECTLY honest that was SOOOO LONG ago that I don't remember anymore. I'm guessing that by the 6 week checkup they should be dissolved.

I wish you the best. The one thing that I do remember about that was hos they PULLED!! I didn't like that at all.  :)

Good Luck and I hope that you are feeling better now after your TVH....Sherry
