knee swellingin my 5yr old grandson

my 5yr old grandsonhas knee swelling, wakes with the pain in the night. the doctor has told his mum she has to take him to hospital. for blood tests, xrays. he cannot run, swim etc on his knee. we are both worried sick what could be the cause please

There are varying reasons , could be growing pains as the tendons become stronger, could be bursitis ..has he inured , fallen on his knees.I think that you should get some tests there are a number of reasons and you need answers to get treatment for him good luck
