Pain behind the knee-4 year old

I have a 4 year old who has been complaining about pain behind his knee.  It was accompanied by a fever.  Today, he has no fever, but will cry when he moves his leg the wrong way.  He is an extremely healthy and active kid, so for him to not want to move around because of pain is a bit odd.  I was told that growing pains happen at this age, but mostly at night.  This has been ongoing for 2 days now from the minute he wakes up until he falls asleep.  Any suggestions?

Did you find anything out?  My son is experiencing the same thing.  We have had xray and nothing shows, the doctors all say "growing pains"  I had it when I was a kid, they said "growing pains"  Now the tendons in the back of my legs ache when I walk for any extended amt of time.  Please post if you find something out before me.

My son who is 5 has this proble too and my gut instinct tells me it's not growin pains.  I tried Calcium Magnesium and other alternative and it did not work.  X-ray showed nothing.  I will take him to another doctor and see if they can do a MRI or CScan or something for peace of mind.

My youngest brother had this same thing.  My father took him to the doctor, then started him on calcium pills and it went away.  Growing pains are not something that everyone just has to "deal with".  Seriously, pain is not part of growing up.
