Strep or ?

It is now Saturday, my daughter was diagnosed with strep throat Wednesday night and started amoxicillin in the urgent care, Friday afternoon she broke out in a itchy rash...mostly on her torso but some on her legs, neck, and arms.  She has been on amoxicillin several times before from ear infections when she was little.  The only difference with that is it is no longer pink (the amoxicillin).  We gave her benadryl Friday in the afternoon and at night and she just woke up again and is still covered in the rash. She also said her lip hurt last night and I noticed it is still a bit swollen.  She also still has white spots on the back of her throat.  A friend of mine said her daughter had strep and it turned to mono and the amoxicillin didn't "agree" with the mono....  Thanks for your help!

what ended up happening to your daughter with the hives and rash?

Is it possible to pop her back over to the pharmacy or dr.'s office to have her blood pressure checked? Swelling in the feet, blanching and pain can be indicative of other issues, and strep is an icky virus to deal with....I'd likely bring her back in for that.

Usually a person has to be exposed to an allergen first before they react, so in most cases, there won't be a reaction the first time, and each subsequent exposure increases the risk of reaction and severity. It sounds like an allergic response, so it would be wise to avoid the penicillins, and I would also ask for an allergy referral, because if she has a true allergy to an antibiotic, she should have a medic alert bracelet. If you are seeing swelling in the lips, it is possible that she could have an anaphylactic reaction in the future.

It's probably taking some time for the strep to clear because her first doses of amox were not effective....probably why there is still some fever, but as Margypops said, trust your gut and don't hesitate to bring her back in.

And I HATE when medical professionals say stuff like, "well, that's weird", as in, well, that wasn't in my medical text book so it must not be true. BULL, anyone can develop any allergy at any time.

My daughter had an anaphylactic egg allergy, but because she had severe reflux (vomiting) and feeding/texture issues, NO ONE would believe that she was allergic to eggs, because she barfed all the time anyway, and she had been eating eggs without problems for a couple of months. Then an allergist finally tested her after close to TWO YEARS of me saying she was allergic, and said, "well, that's weird", when she tested positive and handed me an epi-pen.....sorry, I just find that so frustrating, lol.

Good luck, and hope she is feeling better soon. Hugs.

Sounds like some water retention it would be a good idea to have her checked on if it continues with a fever ,keep an eye on her there may be an allergic reaction going on .Go by a mom's gut and take her to ER if she seems worse .let us know how she is doing ...

She still has the rash today, although not as much of it.  But I noticed her feet are swollen and kinda red and they blanch when I push my finger on them.  She really doesn't want to walk either.  She was cranky again today and had a axillary temp of 100.2  She had her second dose of azithromycin this afternoon.  And the temp was after we played outside for a little bit.

I took her back to urgent care and the doc said she probably has "penicillinase" and switched her to azithromycin
The rash is hives though.... then the pharmacist said I should make sure she doesn't get anymore penicillins but I told him she has had amoxicillin a lot when she was younger for ear infections...he thought that was weird...
but we'll see how the new med goes...

Yes I would say your friend is correct ..It is the amoxicillin,it is a side effect not an allergy,so ask your doctor but it is usually advised to stay on the amoxycillin course .Is it itching, ? it is always advisable to speak to your doctor..
