Are you on any type of diet? i first started metformin in 2007 and saw no weight loss because I continued to eat what I wanted. Now I started again in September 2008 at 500mg 1x a day for 4 months. I then started on 2x a day when I saw my doctor in jan 2009. It has helped me lose 55lbs. I see my doctor again in July and I wonder if he will up my dose again.
Hi Dear,
First of all calm down!!! Second you should not up your dose unless your doctor told you to do so, I gradually increased all the way up to 2000mg of extended release a day but that was by my doctors orders only. Initially I started at 500 once a day for a week, and then to 500mgs twice a day for 1 week, and then to 500mgs three times a day for 1 week, and then eventually 500mgs four times a day for always...or in my case until pregnancy is acheived. As far as the weight loss I was also told that I should cut the CARBS down to a bare minimum get at least 15 to 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week and just maintain a good diet. Along with that and the metformin I SHOULD loose weight, well I've lost about 10 pounds so far and I've been on it in full force since December, I know that's not a lot of weight loss but I haven't been neccessarily sticking with the reccommended life style.
What I think you should ask your doctor for is a recommendation to a nutrionist if weight loss is your main goal and reason for taking metformin. Also find out why you were prescribed metformin (ie was it to control your menstrual cyle, maintain or help with the PCOS, help you acheive a pregnancy in the long run, or for another health reason like diabetes, etc). Lastly you might want to ask her if taking the BC pills and metformin together is helping you because a lot of women gain weight on BC pills and taking these together could be counteracting each other. Basically you need to find out what's your long term game plan or reason for taking this, once you find that then you will have a better understanding of your weightloss. Also ask her if your dose should be increased normally it is increase to an amount that is allowing you to see results, but results as in ovulation, lower testosterone, thining hair, more of the symptoms related to PCOS rather than just the weightloss. You should also understand that metformin is not prescribed for weightloss it's prescribed more so for the list of items I just mentioned. So hopefully this helps. Good Luck!
