I take metformin for insulin resistance and ovarian cysts. My doctor started me on 500 mg, taken with dinner and with in the first few days I had loose bowels. That went away and as long as I stay on my high fiber low glycemic diet I have no problems. My doctor started me on a low dose so that my body could get use to it. I have heard blogs from other women that were put on a high dose from the very beginning and they had all kinds of problems. You need to be smart and start on a low dose, eat high fiber, low glycemic and exercise if you want to see benefits. The medication can't work by itself. You should also consume a lot of water. I found that the first 4 weeks it dried my nasal passages and mouth. I used saline mist to help moisturize my nose. That has gone away. You must not drink alcohol while on this medication. It could be very damaging to vital organs. It has been a few months and my doctor added 250 more mg. per day. She checks my blood for acidosis and low b-12 periodically. It has helped me greatly. My diet and exercise weren't helping enough with my condition. This was the next best option. Sometimes you have to take risks to better your health. Start on a low dose and increase it gradually and you will be fine. You can message me if you need any more info.
not sure but just a heads up when you first take it, you will have bad diarrea, so in order to make it less severe or not at all take fiber cabsuls it will help. take two everytime you take metformin, and when you get use to it slowly stop taking them you will be fine.
It's not that common.
Metformin has been around a long time, is well-tolerated and has a generally good safety record. If your physician prescribed it, there must be a good reason. I would not hesitate to take it in the dose he/she recommends.
