Excessive bleeding

Has anyone experienced a lot of bleeding? way more than spotting or a period.  On friday I experienced so much bleeding, I thought there is no was the baby will be ok and I am going to bleed to death in front of my daughter.  After a trip to the er and many tests and ultrasounds the baby is doing just fine, up high in the uterus, good strong heartbeat and cervix was closed.  The dr's said no way were they going to poke around for fear of causing a problem.  Any thoughts? I am hoping it was a fluke event and not the foreshadowing of something yet to come like birth defects etc... I am going back to the dr on wed for a check up after some rest.

Thanks ladies for all the positive stories, what a stressfull time we have had! I wonder if the bleeding could be some type of abrasions due to so many internal u/s this is an ivf baby.  I have had some cramping today can't even specifically say where just a dull achy feeling that goes down my left leg sometimes, seems to feel better when i move around.  what happened to the good old days where you miss a period find out you are pg then 9 months later you have a baby?  Best of luck to us all!

Well let me tell you my story…I had some bleeding when I was 9 weeks, went to L&D and they told me everything looked fine and these type of things happen early in pregnancy.  It happened again at 10 weeks, this time it was bright red and a lot, I was scared to death and thought immediately I was having another miscarriage.  I again when to L&D and they examined me for over 10 minutes trying to figure out what the heck was going on – couldn’t find nothing again.  Well at 12 weeks, it happened again. I'm talking bright red, with huge clots, clots the size of oranges (no lie, sorry tmi). We were getting ready to go into a restaurant to eat and I felt this huge gush of something.  When I looked down I said to myself that I was losing this baby too.  I lost so much blood they almost had to do a blood transfusion.  Again, when to L&D and the doctor examined me for over 20 minutes.  I work at this hospital and the doctors know me and my history very well.  She was determined to find out what the heck was going on.  They told me to get undressed and they would examine me, I told them I was sitting in a puddle of blood and I wanted to find out if my little man was still alive first.  My husband assured me all the way to the hospital that he was a fighter and that everything was going to be okay.  I go up on the table and they did a sonogram and he was just moving all around in there and the doctor said he seemed to be fine.  Come to find out I had 2 cervical polyps in my cervix. I was put in the next day for emergency surgery to have them removed.   Here I am 12 weeks pregnant having emergency surgery with a spinal block, talk about scared.  Once they got in there, it would have caused more bleeding to have them removed, so they just left them and I never had any bleeding after that.

so sorry you are going thru this...i know its scary! i believe it was in my eigth week i was at a childrens party feeling great and all of a sudden i thought i peed myself...i felt something trickeling down my leg...i rushed to the bath room and i was no joke GUSHING blood all over...looked like a crime scene! disgusting i know! my husband and i wernt to the ER convinced the pregnancy was over...but like you my cervix was closed and the ultrasound looked great. at 10 weeks  i gushed blood again all over...same thing..baby was great! at first they said its most likely a partial placenta previa...with a clot of blood on my cervix. apparently this can happen and your baby will be just fine. you did the right thing by going to the ER...and they did their part. try and hang in there...especially if it happens again...just keep getting checked out.

I'm sorry your going through a stressful time. And yes, some women do experience a heavy bleed in pregnancy.  I have bled on and off throughout my whole pregnancy, sometimes spotting, sometimes more then that and I know it's scary.  Sometimes Dr.'s are able to diagnose why it happens...could be a hematoma for example.  That may or may not be seen on an ultrasound.  Other times they find no explanation and it just stops.  It's good you went and checked it out right away and I am glad to hear baby is doing fine.  And don't worry, as far as I know bleeding during pregnancy is not linked to birth defects at all.  Take care and take it easy.  Please update us on how you and the little one are doing.
