Fertility drugs

I had decided not to TTC again after my second m/c, but my mother told me I would regret it. So that leaves me with fertility drugs. I went on the MedHelp fertility section and read some pretty awful things about the available drugs. I have an appointment on Monday, and I want to go in with an opinion. I don't have the luxury of time, being 43, so what are my most aggressive options (short of IVF) and what are the potential side effects people have experienced. ALSO, did any of the drugs WORK???

My son and my current pg are the result of IUI and fertility meds.. I've taken clomid, follistim (injectable) and hcg trigger... None of the meds were bad... the worst thing I experienced was some bloating...

For my son it took 3 IUI cycles and with my current pg it took 4 IUI cycles... it was all totally worth it and I would do all over again if I had too...

First off, I am so sorry for your losses.  I had 4 m/c before I finally got one to stick and my DD is now just over a year old.  I can totally understand wanting to give up - your mom is probably right, but remember it is your choice, not hers to make.

That being said, it may not help to have an opinion of what drugs you think you want to go on before meeting with the doctor.  Do you know what has caused the miscarriages?  That will help determine what course of action to take.  For me, we didn't know a definitive cause, but had a few maybe's that we treated and finally got the right combination (metformin and progesterone) - but that isn't the right combo for everyone.  Is your doctor appt with an RE?  If so, they will do testing to try to determine what has caused your losses and it could give clear indication of how to fix it - it could also give a lot of maybe's or a lot of nothing, so you have to be prepared to walk away not knowing what will work and trying all sorts of things.

Good luck with whatever you decide and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me about my experiences!

Hi!  This is such an emotional and painful journey, isn't it? Doesn't seem quite fair...

I have been on a range of drugs and an IVF and I can tell you that for me, I liked the Follistim Injectables but I reacted so well to them, that I had to take the next month off for fear of hyperstimulation, so that was frustrating.

Clomid, for me, was awful. I was a complete hot mess on them with witchiness being off the charts!!

I used Femara for the last few cycles before my BFP (I got lucky on a break) and also used an HCG booster shot, post-ovulation. This was truly my favorite protocol. I didn't have crazy side effects with the Femara and it didn't over-stimulate my ovaries!

Good luck and hope this helps!

sorry this is so hard. i too have been told that only thing i will not regret is trying. so i keep on. i did conceive with clomid twice. but i had a mc with both. now i am on follistim which is just more aggressive. not because clomid does not work enough, but just to get to the finish line faster. send me a note with any more ques. :)
