Oh NO, Is this Menopause at 42?

Hi,
I'm concerned...I'm late for my period by 1 day (that in itself is not such a big deal) but I have not had any premenstrual spotting which I have always had for at least the past I don't know HOW many years.  I didn't ovulate last month; either that, or I missed it - I wasn't consistent in my tracking for the month of June.  My period before that was sort of normal,  it was 3 days late, except that it was lighter than usual, but lasted longer than usual - 6 days instead of the usual 3 - 4 days.  And by lighter, I don't mean just spotting but more like a very light flow (sorry for TMI).  I guess my question is, when menopause begins, does it just start all at once, or is it a gradual process?  I really don't know much about it.  I haven't taken a pregnancy test because I did have "sort of" a normal period last month, and since that period, we have not had any time for TTC.  Any information and comments would be greatly appreciated!!

I wouldn't worry to much about it. Menopause is defined by going one year without a period.  It sounds to me more that you are starting perimenopause which for many of us can last 10 years.  The most common symptom is irregular periods.  I have been doing that for a few months now..sometimes they are at 28 days, but have been both early and late on occasion.  I also find many of them are shorter in duration and not as heavy (like that part..lol).  I am also 42 and we are at the age where this is beginning for many of us, but chances are menopause is still a long way away.  And yes, you still can conceive during perimenopause..many do.  See your Dr. if you have any concerns, but I doubt it is anything to worry too much about.

Hi, Thanks for your post.  I'm glad to know I can still concieve if this is indeed the beginning of perimenopause.  Some fertility clinics will not treat patients at this stage, even if they're not using their own eggs, which I don't really understand, but alot of clinics do, so thats a good thing.  You'd think I would know more about this next stage of life at my age, but truth be told, I don't.  I've never had kids, and I really would like to have one, (have been trying for years) and it's just a topic I'd rather not think about right now.  Still no signs of even premenstrual spotting.  I went ahead and took a pregnancy test just for the heck of it, which was negative...I kind of expected that since I haven't had any of the classic early pregnancy symptoms, other than the obvious late period. I will be trying  fertility treatments again in August or September, and hopefully it will be a success this time.   Thanks again, babywish_....
