Is it possible?

Hi; I am 52 yr. old very physically fit woman now over 2 weeks late on periods. (before now they were clockwork). I took a clearblue test a little over one week ago and it said pregnant. I called ob/gyn nurse and was sent for blood test. On follow up phone call Dr. said my blood was negative and FSH was 60, that I was menopausal. I have since taken a different brand pregnancy test, and that is positive. My family history for menopause is very late (3 sisters). I have had no warning signs but am feeling slight cramps and tiredness unusual for me. I was told  to wait for my normal yearly exam near end of July, and not to be worried if I get period meanwhile. I have 3 children ages 11-20 and would consider this pregnancy a gift...

She did not have a period in 3 years and thought she was going through/had gone through menopause.  She has been having UTIs constantly since about the time of conception and then had back pains and the doctor asked for a ultrasound to check for stones.  She couldn't tell her husband for 2 weeks because she was in such shock.  She took several home pregnancy tests before it settled in.

Hi; That is very exciting news about your client. Did you say she did NOT have a period in 3 years? Did she do a HPT and blood test at any time or was it by chance that she had ultrasound for kidney stones?

It is definitely not impossible!!

btw, I currently have a client who is 51 and pregnant with her 5th child.  Her youngest graduated high school last year and it was a complete surprise for them.  Her doctor also told her it was menopause and she has had a period in over 3 years.  She is perfectly healthy and so is her baby.  She only found out she was 3 months pregnant during a scan for possible kidney stones.

Are you taking prenatal vitamins?  If not I would suggest you take them.  It will not be a problem for you to wait until you July appt to get some more tests run and even request an ultrasound. Most OBs won't even see you before 12 weeks (which I hate personally, people have questions!!!).  Their nurses will tell you to get vitamins and return every 4-6 weeks until 20 weeks.

It could be that the tests are confusing the high FSH levels for high HCG levels.  What did your doctor say about getting the positive pregnancy tests?  Beings that your FSH is so high it means that the quality of your eggs are diminished which would indicate the menopause.  That being said I never say anything is impossible so I would see another doctor and get a second opinion.  Have them maybe draw some more blood work just to make sure it's coming up negative.  I am surprised your doctor did not want you to come back into the office for a follow up to discuss this more with you and do some more testing.  Please get a second opinion because if you are pregnant you will want to get seen ASAP.  Sorry I don't have an exact answer for you but good luck.

Hi; thank you for respons. The clearblue one I used was high-tech digital with word PREGNANT. The next one I used was cheaper version with vertical line for test check and I got a plus (pregnant). I will make appointment with my family dr.

Pregnancy tests work on the hormone HCG which, as far as I know, is only produced when you are pregnant.  I was not aware it was produced during menopause.  Given that your bloodwork said negative, it is fairly unlikely you are pregnant though, as blood tests are far more accurate a way to measure.  I have had a false positive on ClearBlue in the past.  The second line was actually a ghost line, however it sure looked like a positive.  I have found that to be the case often with blue dye tests.  If your second HPT was a blue dye as well, I would try a pink dye test, such as First Response.  If it too is positive, I would see your Dr. again.  I may be wrong, perhaps menopause can trigger a positive.  I just have never heard of that.  Good luck to you.
