HCG Levels Rising

On 5/25 I found out that I had and ectopic pregnancy.  I was hospitalized and given 2 shots of methotrexate.  I didnt start bleeding until 3 days later.  I bled for 16 days.  No heavy bleeding or unbarable cramps.  It really felt like a normal period.  It was just really long.  When I took the methotrexate my HCG was 12000.  the next week it was 11500 then it dropped to 833.  I go once a week to have blood drawn.  My Dr called today to inform me that my HGC level had incresed to 1500.  I have to have blood drawn tomorrow so they can determine if they will give another shot.  Is this common?  Should the levels be rising?  I am thinking that I should ask them to do a vaginal ultrasound to see if they see anything at all.  Be it in or around my tubes or in my uterus.  Today I would have been 8wks 3days.  Help me!!!

You should wait until your levels zero out before taking Amy folic acid, including prenatals. It can dull the effects if the methotrexate. I too suffered an ectopic in October 2011, and had to take two doses or methotrexate, so I know how impatient you feel right now. You just want to avoid complicating it any further.

Update.  It turns out that my count did go down when I went to have blood drawn again.  Right now I'm at 308.  This is taking sooo long.  I have started back taking my vitamins with an extra 800mg of folic acid.  Everyday.  Im not patient at all.......

With any miscarriage it is not super uncommon to have levels continue to increase.  Methotrexate is given to help the body naturally expel any tissue, etc.  Even though it may be out of your tubes, it is possible that a sac developed in the uterus or that your body didn't completely expel everything.  Even with etopic, it is possible (and not that uncommon) to develop an empty intrauterine sac.  It's good they are following up.  All the best to you, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had an ectopic 1/2012. Hcg levels went down after two shots of methotrexate. My dr said if they go up or stay the same after the two initial shots that usually means you didn't expell the fetus/sack and theyll usually give a third shot or do a d&c.. My symptoms after the shots didn't start until the next day, but when I got then I knew I was expelling the baby... Horrible pain cramping diherrhea and throwing up all at once. Went to e.r. It was so bad. Id never recommend those shots.  Honestly my guess is your body didn't expell the baby yet. Hopefully this is all over for u soon I know how youre feeling.
