Strange Pains

I am only 13 weeks, 5 days pregnant but for about the last two weeks, I have been having unusual pains in my groin and pelvis.  It started in my right groin and then spread to the entire pelvic area.  It hurts most during the first few steps when I start walking and when I move around in bed while laying down.  It also hurt worse as the day wears on. Sometimes it is so painful it takes my breath away for a few seconds but mainly is a dull ache.  It is the strangest thing because I am not really showing yet and have only gained about 3-4 pounds so far.  I can't imagine that this is from the increase weight of the baby.  I have a doctors appointment on Thursday to talk to my doctor about this but I was wondering if anyone else has had similar pains.  I worry about how I will handle this pain as I get bigger.  Thanks.

Along with everyone else you might see medically, I would consider consulting with an acupuncturist.  If it is something they treat, (in other words, an acupuncturist will tell you whether acupuncture is helpful for this issue or not) it certainly won't hurt.

Hi,

you could also try looking for a craniosacral therapist.  My sister had this after her last miscarriage and the craniosacral therapist was very helpful.  It was so bad she couldn't even sit down.... she is fine now.... after 2 months...

Thanks for the input everyone.  KarenDiane and AnnieBrooke, you were right, it is not round ligament pain.  Seems like it is symphis pubis dysfunction.  Basically my pelvis is misaligned (from a genetic sacrum problem that I have, combined with the bones of the pelvis loosening in pregnancy, like happens to all women). Mine was aggravated by being in stirrups for about an hour during my CVS a few weeks ago.  This is troubling because some women with this end up in wheelchairs by the end of the pregnancy and it can also cause mis-positioning of the baby, which can make labor really interesting.

My doctor is sending me to a physical therpaist who specializes in pelvis issues.  I am also seeking out a wonderul otrhobionomist and will embark on some prenatal yoga.  I need to be very proactive now about getting this under control before I get bigger. Thanks for your concern.

I agree with KarenDiane in thinking it doesn't sound quite like round ligament pain.  If you google round ligament pain, you might be able to find a chart showing the ligaments involved, and they are kind of off to one side or the other.  I'd be wondering more about sciatica or some other nerve-related issue.  I hope your doctor can clarify for you.  Let us know!

It doesn't sound like my experience with round ligament pain but maybe it's different with the first baby. I can't remember that far back :) But, if that's what it is then it will be off and on through pregnancy. Let us know what your Dr. says.

It could be what they call "round ligament pain". I'm now 18 wks pregnant, and experienced this starting around where you are. For me, it felt like sharp pains on either side of my groin area, and then sometimes dull aching afterward. If that's your problem, I think it continues throughout pregnancy, but kindof gets better and worse depending on exactly what's going on.
