painful pap/cervix exam

Hey gals...;)
Just confirmed I was pregnant today!!!  Yeahhh!!  But, I have a concern.  My cervical/pap smear was painfull!!  I don't mean just uncomfortable..it hurt.  The doctor actually couldn't finish and now I have to go BACK to try again!!!!!   My heartrate went sky high cuz i was so nervous about the pain and I even cried..that was embarrasing!!!  I know I have to go back for my babys sake..well and mine... but I am so scared to go.  I get upset thinking that i got to go back.    Paps aren't suppose to hurt so I hear.. Is there something wrong with me?  Wouldn't my doctor give a reason why I can't tolerate the pap????  Anyone have this happen?  I need some major support. ;(
Thanks!

Thanks for the comment.
I guess I am feeling anxious because I keep thinking what if...what if something happens, what if they find this wrong..etc..etc.. and I cannot stop my mind from thinking these things.   I keep thinking that maybe my exam was so bad because something is obstructing that area.  It is also painful sometimes during sex and I feel stupid for not getting this checked out before becomming pregnant. ;(   I have always been a worry wort, and have suffered anxiety.  I knew I would have some anxiety, but NOT as much as I am having now.  In the back of my head I always thought there is NO WAY I will ever even get pregnant..and now that it happened at age 38.. I am NERVOUS.
Symptoms- Yes!!  Nausea constant, headaches, little light headed and pressure feeling in the belly.  And I have been very emotional.  As in wanting to cry because I am scared.  I know this is NOT good for the baby or myself..and I am finding resources to help me out.  I heard the book- what to expect when expecting is a life saver, so I am going to buy that today.  I wanted to have a baby soooo bad.. and I mean bad!!!  And now that I am...Im frightened.  It's making me sad. ;(    Maybe the hormones are making me feel this way.. I don't know.  I wish I did know.  I wish I knew alot more than I do!!!!  They are going to have to literally KNOCK me unconcious to give birth cuz my anxiety will kick in and be having panic attacks!!!  Ughh.. ok Im done complaining.  sorry!

cheriwashere - I think just letting the ob/gyn do the paps is a wonderful idea!  If you think about it, that's basically all they do anyway so they have tons of experience & probably won't be as painful.  five years ago, I had a very painful pap w/a family practitioner who was a woman (shocking!).  I vowed to only go to my ob/gyn & if it happened again, then I would kick the doctor in the head - JUST KIDDING!

Why are you feeling so anxious?  I'm sorry you haven't been able to enjoy being pregnant - early pregnancy's so hard.  I remember going through tons of anxiety during my last one - probably drove my dh nutty (probably the doctor too - LOL).  Are you having lots of symptoms?

Thanks for your comments.  Since this was my first visit with my primary doctor.. I decided to just let the OBGYN finish the job and take care of me the rest of the way.  So, I will schedule with her and dump my primary care doctor...at least for this kinda stuff.   Im still nervous though.  So far Im not enjoying being pregnant.  I just don't feel good and feel super anxious constantly. ;(  sigh

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  I have a tilted cervix which makes all internal exams, and even sex sometimes uncomfortable...but nothing painful.  Was your pain because of the entry of the forceps, or the actual pap smear, the scraping of your cervix?  I hope your next pap goes better : )  Pam

Is this your regular doctor (that you see for paps usually?) the reason I ask is that I've been having paps for about 20 years and my doctor recently moved so the new dr tried to perform the pap on me and it was BRUTAL, i was jumping around like a jumping bean by the sixth stabbing attempt, finally i said ENOUGH. She said that I had a tilted cervix (which nobody else has ever mentioned, nor have they had a problem giving me a pap) so she referred me to an ob who had no problem so I think some Doctors are Brutal, see if you can have a different Doctor perform it because I had thought to myself that if the brutal pap had been done on me when I very first started them I probably would never have gone back for one!

Good Luck and congrats on your pregnancy.

Do you like, respect, and trust your doctor?
If you have any apprehension about your medical care - get a new Dr ASAP.
Otherwise, I would give them a call and discuss your feelings so that you have peace of mind.
Good luck,
Lisa

I'm sorry this happenned.  Did your physician give you any explanation?  Try focussing on your breathing the next time around.  Good Luck!

Congratulations on your BFP.
