To be honest with you the pain IS REAL. I do have a high pain threshold but it was unbearable for me during my last delivery.  I knew I was giving birth to a stillborn child but
I still went through 10 hours of labor.  I had 2 epidurals that day because the first didn't take. I've had little if any side effects.  I wouldn't get too worked up because no one knows how it will go until it happens... You'll know when u know if u need the epidural.  If I were u I'd let the moment decide. Don't lock yourself into anything..I think that works best

My sister had an epidural and had horrible back pains for like 9 years. But she said the doctor who did it did it when her contractions were too close together and she couldn't hold still and even though he shouldn't have he did it anyway

Hi, Brooklyn,
I was also very anxious with my first pregnancy, anticipating birth pain. So many mothers told me every horror story you can think of, and it really made  me fearfuI- so I  actually prayed. It really helped me and my prayers were actually answered! The doctors even commented on what a peaceful environment it was in our room during delivery. The barometric pressure dropped, causing storms, affecting delivery, so every mother was screaming, having contractions, ready to deliver, but I opted to have the epidural, and I felt nothing. I was at peace. God is in control, and there is nothing you can do to change anything, so why not trust in Him to help you through it all?  :)
You can bring a cd player and put your pretty music on.
Relax and remember that this event comes only once, so no matter what, your experience will be special. Journal your thoughts and prayers, and it will help you, and even be a sweet memory for you child to read on his/her birthday someday.

God bless you.

Most women have no lasting side effects from an epidural. Only about 2-3% of women have lasting side effects such as headaches and even less likely partial paralysis. The most common side effect of an epidural is a drop in moms BP. This can sometimes reduce fetal heart rate but usually isn't enough to cause any harm to mom or baby. If you go in and there are any concerns with baby's heart rate they may not allow an epidural at all.

I've had 3 epidural and my only side effect is pain st the site of it for a couple of days. That was with my first. I knew the risk of complications but my first baby was a very tough 17 hr induction. My second got stuck with shoulder distotia. My epidural was not continuous it was a 2 hr epi. You may not need one not ever ones labor is bad.
