OK what I read in 3 different books (since I dont have a  little one) was that anything prior to around 10 or 12 wks is basically a muscle reflex.  They cant see that well unless you are really close.  Around that 3 months window is when they can see and focus and respond w/ "true" smiles.  And in hind site my niece is 4 months and that sounds right.  She smiles if you smile at her big time!!

mine smiled only once... lol I was singing the song feelings...omg.. I couldnt remember the words to other songs.. so just a quick song to ease her.. anyway..when I got to the wo wo wo feelings part..I swear she cracked a big smile.. even in her eyes. I busted out laughing too.. what a sweet moment. her first smile/laugh was at mommy singing a funny song.

Hannah, my Noah's only now is smiling consistently and he's nearly 9 weeks old.  Meli, I also think that usually they start smiling consistently around 6 weeks but from what I've read it's more of a 'reactive' smile whatever that means.  The 'social' smiles come later on.  Noah will smile at the back of his carseat for example and I'm thinking, baby, what are you smiling at?

Smiled at 3 weeks and does it all the time.....On a side note, if you use bottles at all, use Dr Brown. Fixed my guys fussyness pretty well and we follow feedings with the baby gas drops. We call it his yummy vanillas. He opens his mouth for it now! He burps great now and he passes gas like no tomorrow, but he's not fussy now. It also improves with age, around 4-6 months they get much better dealing with their gas.

I don't think the ones when they are sleeping count.  My Jacob was a late smiler and when he did finally smile it was real frequently... he had to grow into it.  Jacob didn't really start smiling until around 8wks or 9wks. He might have smiled a couple times before that, but not consistently until then.  ... I think 6wks is the average.
