Calling all the ladies with PCOS or high testosterone!

I am having a hard time finding stuff on the Internet so I thought I'd just ask about peoples' experiences. If you have PCOS and take Metformin, do you have side effects? Does it help you lose weight?

The reason I ask is because apparently PCOS can affect your ability to lose weight which is something I've been struggling with. I was 135 lbs pre-babies and I have FIFTY lbs to lose to get back to that weight. I'm 5'3" so it is VERY important I get down to that weight for my health because 135 lbs is the higher end of how much weight someone of that height should be.

I'm just hoping that if I have to take this that it'll be beneficial on that end as well.

AND... is there anyone else out there who just has high testosterone and want to chat with me?

That sounds like PCOS from what I've read, rachie. Everyone's weight is in their middle with it. The Metformin is supposed to help get rid of the weight and PCOS makes you a higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes because of the weight. It isn't even a lifelong thing. You just take the meds until your ovaries start doing what they're supposed to do (my doc thought about 2 years).

What I've had to get done is a blood test for my hormone levels. Then I'm going to get a 3 hour glucose and insulin blood test on Monday. And finally a sonogram on Wednesday. I should know if I have it by then. You should ask your doc if you should get checked out for it because left untreated you might not be able to have anymore kids (is what my doctor told me). I don't mean to scare you or anything, but I just want you to make sure that you're going to be okay!!!

joy i am in the same boat...my old doctor kept telling me she thought i had it but i didnt find out for sure until this week from my new doc.  My general practice doc had given me some metformin but i never took it.  My new doc gave me the clomid but didn't tell me if i should take the metformin with it or not and i forgot to ask.  I think i am going to call there monday and ask them to ask him.  I too was 135 before i got pregnant with my son.  After him i regulated down to about 145.  Then my weight crept up to 172 i lost back down to 153 by doing weight watchers but it took me a really long time and a lot of work.  I went with my sister in law and she lost so much faster than me even when she didnt do well that week and i tried really hard.  Then we got pregnant with the baby we m/c and i gained it all back in 11 weeks while pregnant.  Then i lost back to 153 AGAIN and as soon as i stopped working out it all came back.   So now here i sit at 172 and 5'8" about to cry.  It seems impossible.  And my weight isn't all over...just around my mid section.

Hi! Joy don know if u remember my earlier posts but thats how i introduced myself...i had pcos and didnt get my cycles for almost over a year and then i got it fixed and my o.b put me on metformin and told me this will not only help my cycles function well but also help me to keep a watch on my weight cos what happens when we have pcos is our body doesnt break the insulin that we get from food and so it turns into fat and metformin help this function...i have Zomet 500mg twice a day b4 food and have been on it for almost 3yrs now and it has sure helped my cycles cos since i got it fixed and started having Zomet my cycles have been on dot perfectly every 25days and sure have been maintaining my weight...Also the o.b told me that i shouldnt give it up till i concieve and give birth cos metformin helps ovaries function properly which will help me concieve and will make sure the baby isnt over weight...so it sure helps...
Now coming to the side effects part of it...well it does make u really tired...the common side effects ul face are hair fall, fatigue and also u got to eat on time to get ur body function well cos having metformin and not eating is like a machine functioning without fuel...

i know what you mean it was very shocking when i had two m/c after two healthy children.  but at least i have them. i feel so blessed to have them. i couldnt imagine what some of the woman on here are going through not having any kids and having repeated mc. i had mine young and didnt think i could be a mom that young but its one the best things that has ever happen to me.. and i wouldnt change it for anything in the world...my sister works all the time and hardly ever eats still no weight gain ,but no weight loss. we went on  a diet together about a year ago and i lost 30 and so did she she gained it all back in 3 months.  shes given up now on weight loss and babies..

Thanks, michellap! I have two little girls and I've had one m/c in-between them so it is kind of shocking to hear something is wrong with me. You should tell her that there is a more holistic (natural) approach other than glucophage (AKA metformin). She could take a variety of vitamins and just tweak her diet and get at least 30 minutes of sweaty exercise a day. I just found all this information just a few minutes ago.

There's also something I found called D-Pinitol? Anyone ever use that or hear of it?

my sister has that . and she is 215lbs. before she was diagnosed she was 135. she can not lose weight if she does she gains it back. she has one daughter 12 and has been trying for 10 years to get pg. however she wont take anything for it. they tried to get her on bc and skip around to get pg but she wont do it. her periods are so missed up. she maybe has one ever 6 months. she gets lots of hair on her face. .. i try to get her to take something but she thinks its GODS will that she doesnt have anymore children... i hope you better luck with yours.  i have seen on a tv special once that you can get pg with this a woman had 3 kids with this but she was taking some medicine for it...
