nifedipine...class c medications??

my doctor prescribed me nifedipine to relax my uterus so it stops cramping in hopes to stop/prevent preterm labor. from what I have read this is a class c medication. I have no idea what that means. I have also read that this medication is usually for use in people with high blood pressure or chest pains and it is supposed to relax your heart muscles. I don't have high blood pressure and im not really sure how that is supposed to relax uterus muscles and I guess im just wondering if any of you have been prescribed this medication or another class c medication? on the warning lable online it clearly states that if you are pregnant or breast feeding you have to consult doctor before use, but doc is obviously ok with it since she is the one who prescribed it...

Risk can not be ruled out- Adequate, well-controlled human studies are lacking, and animal studies have shown a risk to the fetus or are lacking as well. There is a chance of fetal harm if the drug is administered during pregnancy; but the potential benefits may outweigh the potential risk.

Thats from a american pregnancy association

It is given for blood presure generally.  Nifedipine works on smooth muscles.  Just as it is effective on lowering blood pressure, it can also relax the uterus.  A lot of blood pressure medications are used to stop preterm labor and contractions.

Your doctor weighed the risks with the benefits and decided it was worth it before he/she prescribed it. We have quite a few pregnant patients who are on it and haven't had any problems.
