3 week old and cereal

I've been told if you are having trouble with reversing a flopped sleep schedule, a tablespoon of rice cereal at bedtime can really help. Turning it into a consistent routine will help get them not only sleeping at night, but sleeping a bit longer (4-5) hours. Has anyone tried this? Success or failure?

I was told by my ped. to put a table spoon in all 3 of my girls bottles at a week old. They are perfectly fine no allergies or problems. Zzz o i would ask your ped if they yhink it is ok.

My pediatrician put my son on cereal in milk from 12 weeks due to VERY bad reflux. It did make him sleep longer. There is absolutely no link between allergies and starting food too early as this is genetic in nature so you are either born prone to food allergies or not. But i would run it past your babies dr as 3 weeks is a bit early. Also, dont know if this is true but the lady that looked after my son from 3mths-3yrs told me that children that start eating earlier are better eaters and are not so fussy when it comes to food. My son is 4 and will eat almost anything i give him...if he starts being fussy i know he has a flu etc on the way

Giving foods to early also leads to higher chance of food allergies. You had to know going into this that babies don't sleep all night and to expect some sleepless nights. To expect a 3 week old to sleep for more than a few hours at a time is unreasonable!

Your baby is way to young to be introducing cereal, plus cereal in a bottle is a huge choking hazard! Try keeping baby up a little more during the day, and keep a consistent night routine to help baby sleep better at night.

Your baby will one day sleep through the night (probably won't happen till about 6mo)...but at three weeks, why would you even expect that? No cereal needed to change baby's day/night cycle...do what other moms said, establish a night routine...baby well naturally adjust.

Absolutely not 3 weeks is to young and honestly there's no sleep expectations at that point I do agree with previous posts with my son I would have all the light on windows open TV loud we would speak loud and once the sun went down lights off or very dim very soft speaking if any was necessary TV to a whisper he had a bath baby massage with lotion and no simulation he had his bottle I would then rock him and sing to him until he went to sleepwhen he woke up I would turn on the bathroom light in my room so that I had just enough light to see would feed him change him and mlay him back down no talking he eventually started sleeping thru the night at 3 months and when I tried cereal then at 3 months it was horrible he was still to young and wound scream as it was trying to digest I never used it on him

I don't think any pediatrician would advise you to put anything in bottle but milk. You can not feed it off a spoon because baby has no tongue  control to get food back to back of mouth to swallow. Like I said before if that is your choice then be very careful, I am a nurse and I know it easy for babies to choke. I had to do it but I was very very careful, I would not advise a parent to do so to change a sleeping schedule.

I agree with the other posters. I think 3 weeks is too young. I'm pretty sure babies have trouble digesting anything other than breast milk or formula at that age. Its also a choking hazard because they can't really hold their necks straight. but talk to your pediatrician about it.

3 weeks is much too early for cereal. Please consult your physician.

My oldest had to have cereal added to the bottle. You have to be very careful because if it is not completely mixed it can be a choking hazard, that is why they say not to add anything to bottle.

My oldest drank three times the amount recommended for her age or more. She was drinking close to eight ounces when she was born. My grandma told me to put the rice cereal in her bottle and she started drinking a normal amount. The cereal is very filling and they will not need as much. It does make them sleep longer but make sure to use caution. I would hate to hear that a baby choked from the cereal not being mixed well. I am sure you heard the cereal thing from a older person but remember back then they learned things the hard way and we do not want to do that.

I'm a former pediatric nurse- absolutely do not give your baby anything other than breast milk or formula. They can not digest it and it's not necessary.  Babies need to feed often to keep up with the demands of their rapidly growing development.  What is more helpful is developing a nighttime routine that helps to destimulate- a nice tub, a little massage with some soft lotion and and a yummy feeding. All helps to relax. And in fairness to your baby and you thinking they should be sleeping through the night is putting too much pressure on both of you.  She's still a newborn and it's completely normal that the baby is still waking.

I wouldn't do it. I would go with cbearsmummy's suggestion about the lighting and not engaging during night time feeding/diaper change.

Personally I would never feed a 3 week old anything! There systems aren't developed enough to digest it properly. Try the lighting the house up during ng the day then an hour or so before bed turn everything right down (tv's radios lights) give bubba a nice warm bath, a baby massage & POP on some white noise. When bub wakes in the middle of the night don't interact or play talk softly & change diapers & feed in minimal lighting. This was all advice given to me by a professional & only took a week or so for my daughter to adjust.
