5 weeks preg- no baby seen on u-s only yolk sak

I went to my dr yesterday for my 1st u/s assuming that I wad 8 weeks pregnant due to my last period, my periods are very irregular though. The ultrasound tech could not see the baby, only the yolk sak was seen. The doctor sent me to get blood taken to check my hormone levels and I have to go back tomorrow to compare the levels. The doctor was being very cold with me and not being very informative, she mentioned how common miscarriages are and mentioned that I possibly could have had one. I haven't had any bleeding or cramping whatsoever though. I guess my question is why she is so quick to jump to a conclusion like that.. Is it because my last period doesn't match with how far along I really am?

Same thing happened to me. Turns out I ovulated late, then my egg took a few days to split in two. 15+2 with twins. Good luck.

At 5 weeks all they will see is the yoke sack and possibly the fetal pole. Even seeing a heart beat is difficult at five weeks. I am a midwife. We NEVER expect to see much at 5 weeks on the ultrasound. So much is dependent on the placement of the fetus. If we do an ultrasound sound this early we are checking yoke sack placement . Looking for atopic pregnancy not much else. You blood work is a better indicator of fetal growth so don't panic and get a new dr.

I think it's a bit insensitive for them.to act like that. If when you go back all is well, might consider a different doc. You'll be spending lots of time with them and if their bedside manner ***** then ditch them!

If you're 5 weeks, it's perfectly normal.   My periods are also irregular and with my current pregnancy I should've been 3 weeks ahead based off of my LMP.  I knew that there was no way in he** that i was 9 weeks at my first ultrasound.  Try not to worry.

I hope all goes well with your pregnancy when I found out I was pregnant based on my menstral cycle I should have been 5 weeks but went to the ER and ended up only at 3 weeks so we only got to see a sac now I'm 38 weeks today.
