bright spot on babys heart

Hi, I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and when I had my 23 week ultrasound it came back with a bright spot on my baby boys heart. My doctor neverentioned this to me and I am not high risk either. I currently switched from my doctor to a midwife and she informed me of the spot and said it could be nothing and I am so young. I am 25 years old. Has anyone had experience with this before? I have an appointment Monday and she will determine whether I need a level II ultrasound. I am getting very nervous.

Hero brianna, just wanted to let you know I private messaged you about previous posts just to chat!

Also I don't know much about the bright spots but don't stress and just be as positive as possible.  I believe stress is the worst for the baby!  Best wishes!

I Switched From AObgyn To A Midwife And She Was Nice Enough To Send Me Back At 37 Weeks Since My Last Doctor Wouldn't To Check On It And The Growth And Everything Was Perfect. I Have Heard It Is Very Common And Don't Stress. I Stressed And Its Gone. It Could Even Be A Calcium Deposit So Don't Stress Yourself.

Depending on which blood test is done, up to 5 chemicals can be checked in mom's blood to refine her age-related risk. They are PAPP-A, hCG, AFP, Estriol, and Inhibin. The combined profile level of these chemicals are unique to chromosome problems. For example, a DS BABY will tend to have mom with low estriol, AFP, PAPP-A and elevated hCG, Inhibin. These values "drive"your risk.....along with an NT measurement if it was taken. Sometimes, but rarely, 1 or 2 of these "analytes" if they are abnormal, can be associated with 3rd trimester growth restriction so a scan for fetal growt in the 3rd trimester is warranted.

DADAT47- that's good to know! My bloods came back early on with Papp-a but low risk for Down's syndrome found out at my last appt she's not too worried and explained it all much better than my first midwife did, she just made me panic my level was 0.381mom she said they only really worry if it's 0.3 or lower... Would that be in line with your thoughts?

It's called an echogenic intracardiac focus (EIF). It is very, very common and it is also a SOFT marker for Down syndrome. No need to worry. Nothing to do with heart function. There is even debate among docs on whether to even call and report the spot. It is so insignificant and causes undo worry. Just saw one on a patient that had a 1 in 10,000 risk for DS!

That's really good to hear that the bright spot is gone! on my last ultrasound at 21 weeks there is a bright spot on my baby's heart but I didn't find out until I saw my midwife last week. She said it could be just a reflection. I'm not worrying too much bcos the person who did the ultrasound said everything looks good the heart, kidneys etc... They will check again at my next scan but that's a relief hearing of other people seeing the same and them going away

I'm sure if my doctor made me check my fluids werent low when they thought it may have been then I'm sure he would have said something if he thought it was serious.

Thank you so much as this is my first. I have an appointment Monday with a new doctor and she will determine if I should have another ultrasound done. I did a lot of researching as well and read the same thing that there is low risk for DS which eases me a little.

Yes, my baby has 3 of them - 2 on liver and one in abdomen. The hospital found them at my 18wk morphology scan and freaked out, asked if I had been exposed to any infectious diseases early in pregnancy and insisted on blood tests to rule out birth defects and said it was an indicator of downs syndrome and wanted to do an amnio. We did the blood tests to see if I was sick but refused the amnio so they gave us 24hrs to think about if we wanted to progress with our pregnancy. Thank god we went and talked to our ob who sent us for a second opinion where they did a 3D scan. The 3D technician and a specialist had a look and said they are little calcified spots or lesions that are extremely common and usually go away by themselves. Sometimes the baby is exposed to a virus and the developing body tries to heal itself by growing a bit more there. They said they see it all the time and its nothing to worry about and that the risks of an amnio far outweighed any benefits seeing as there were no other soft markers for DS. Anyway, went for another scan at 24wks at the hospital and they brought it up again and we've all agreed we'll just keep an eye on it and deal with it postnatally now. Everything I have read on the net says that its very common and really of no sigmificance so I'm happy to wait and see. I hope this helps you and doesn't scare you. Good luck!
