About cold cuts

I'm 6 months pregnant in craving a sandwich so bad. But I hate the meat being hot! Now can you eat fresh cut meat cold? Or is all the meat has to be heated fresh cut and process meat? I want a publix sandwich and they cut the meat right this is that okay or still a big no no???? Please help!

I am expecting my 7th child and in all my pregnancies including this one, I have eaten cold deli meat!! Especially subways Turkey 12 inch!! No bacteria infections for me so far!!! I follow most safety guidelines line for children (ones I feel are actually true) as well as in my pregnancies, but hey, I confess I eat cold deli meat and I have never once heated them!!! I also drink more then the recommend caffeine intake, yet all my children are well behaved (no effects on their behalf)!!!! :) ;)

@emilee99 lol!!! very true.. if everyone told me no, I probably wouldn't either! haha -- I am a worry-wart, but just as she said.. everyone has told me it was fine, so I'll continue.

I will admit, IN THE BEGINNING of my pregnancy everyone had me terrified, and I did microwave my meat until it was super hot & eat it after it cooled down.. eventually I asked my OB about it; therefore, I stopped doing it. ((:

One idea is to buy your lunch meat, heat it, then re-refridgerate it immediately. As long as you handle it safely after heating that should do the trick, even if it gets cold again

It's true. Must talk with doctor and whatever they say is best because they would be the ones to advise you if you did some how get it. My doc says no, my midwife says no and my insurance future moms.program nurse had her monthly interview on the phone with me and said no. Lol so I guess that is why I'm on the no side. But if all those professionals said it was ok I would probably have myself a damn sandwich! Haha but I follow all the guidelines. What can I say. I'm a safety dork!  At least for pregnancy any way

I think life comes with risks, and when we start panicking about everything we forget that. However, to each their own right? We all need to be mindful of what we think is risky or not and act accordingly. I for one drink raw milk because I'm less worried about the dangers and more confident about the health benefits.

no, you can't see the listeria or the dirtiness...but you also have to make sure it's heated to a certain degree, if that's the route you choose to take & actually do it "properly" - which I don't have anything to measure it by, and just as @ash060115 said.. as well as my mama, grandma, etc. if cold meats were that bad for you... well again, to each their own. I ate one last night, cold.

talk to your OB, and make the best decision for yourself. you'll get 1,000 opinions of ANY and EVERY topic of pregnancy imaginable. no one knows best, but we can all only do our best. again, good luck & congrats! ((:

Problem is you don't know what meat is "dirty". It's a bacteria  and bacteria can grow on anything. It actually can be on fruits especially melons which is why you should wash all fruits with hot soapy water before cutting into them. That's why during pregnancy you're  just supposed to heat it to be safe. It's kind of overkill but all It takes is one bit of bacteria. And again. Once you heat it as long as you don't put it back with the Previously unheated meat you can refrigerate it and eat it cold!

I eat cold meat sandwich. .. I never heard it was bad until this app...
I asked my doctor and her response was "if cold meats were bad for pregnant women would we have a deli with cold meats here at the maternity hospital" ....

I then went to the hospital deli for sambos lol

I'd eat it

well, to each their own, but...

my OB says the meat is okay as long as it hasn't been sitting out for a long period of time, and it's okay as long as it's not dirty and/or undercooked.. example, the deli hasn't cleaned it properly, red hamburger meat, etc.

I buy and eat the packaged meats (sliced) from walmart and the grocery store all the time, and my favorite sub is the cold cut trio from subway. I'll be 36 weeks Friday, and all is well.

listeria isn't in all meat, it's in bad/dirty meat.. just talk to your OB about it, and good luck! ((:

It has to be heated yo steaming to be sure it doesn't contain listeria. A lot of women eat lunch meat and don't heat it and are fine, but if you do get listeriosis  and don't know so you don't get antibiotics it can cause stillbirth and or miscarriage. It can take 2 months for symptoms to even show if thru show at all, so I'm too paranoid and don't need it that bad. You could always heat it to steaming then refrigerate it til cold. That would be fine!
