I'm ftm 31 weeks now. I have 2 cats that were unwanted kittens dur to unreasonable owners not having the mum cats spayed.  I'm not worried at all that they will bother the baby. They're not grumpy in any way an i ruffle them up sometimes playing with them, they just  run off if they don't want to play lol. I grew up with cats also and had no problems.  You can get nets to go over moses baskets and cots if your worried.

To respond to the milk and cat "myth". It is not a myth i almost died because of it as a baby but was hooked up to a monitor and it started going off when the cat cut off my air. However the only reason i would truly worry about the cat and this honestly goes for all animals is that if it is used to being number one it may not take to the sudden change in "power" if you will. I do suggest bringing home a blanket or something with babies scent so the kitty knows it before the baby comes home. Happy birthing!

I couldn't get rid of my pets because I am having a baby. When you take in a pet I believe it is to care for them for its whole life.

I just had my beloved cat die. My cat I had as a teenager had kittens when I was pregnant with my first. I kept a few and still had one until recently. When my first was born my cat slept in my daughter's crib with her. She slept across her belly and if I put my daughter in my bed the cat went also. She smelled her face once when I first brought the baby in after that nothing but sleeping with her. I never seen anything like the devotion my cat showed with babies. She was the same with all babies. She would let them pull and squish her and did nothing but if I did it she would attack me. She was very good about her behavior around babies. I did care for her very well and she did not have fleas or ticks. Why would someone let their cat have fleas or ticks? Some people are just so not responsible and should not take on responsibility for any one or thing.

A toddler & a cat is not the same thing to me. Nowhere near. But like I said I'm not an animal lover and I realize many people Think pets are children so I'll just exit door left on this convo.

We have cats, and one of them will lay down on your face if you let him in the room. Actually on top of your face/head. First cat I have met to do that, and its unbearable annoying. No matter how many times I push him off my face or the bed he immediately comes right back. So we have to keep him locked out. I think its pretty rare, but it does happen. It has nothing to do with smelling milk though, he's just a weird cat. I'd never want any animal in the same sleeping room as a baby - just keep the door closed if you are going to have pets. We are going to probably get rid of our cats though, because I am badly allergic, and they shed like crazy and I hate the hair on everything, and anything that poos in the house and walks around in the poo and then tracks it across the floor is kind of gross. Outside animals only for me, or animals in cages. I don't want a baby crawling on the same floor as animals.

Animals are very protective of babies, even babies of another species. We have 4 cats and I know they will do just fine with the baby however they will not be in the room at night when baby is sleeping (just cu they get wound up at night). I personally find it disgraceful that someone would get rid of a pet that they committed to just because they are having a baby. To me that's just like saying "oh well we're pregnant again, we better put our toddler up for adoption because he/she might hurt the baby".

Im glad to be educated today (not sarcasm) to find that this info was a myth but upon educating myself I've learned that there is a small chance of cats snuggling too close & unintentionally smothering baby, ticks & fleas, & scratching whether intentional or not. Animal lovers would risk it I guess or go off of the positive experience of others but I just don't love pets that much to chance it.

I have 3 cats and they were fine with baby. Just give them lots of love like they had before baby.

I was vet told to Gentely tug on their feet and tail and ears to ensure they won't scratch as a response since they are not declawed.

I won't let cats sleep in the same room as baby, but for the most part it will be scared of the child

My cats have been through 2 pregnancies before this one and we've had to issues. Just make sure the cat can't get in the baby's room.

Mt cats were fine with my baby. They were curious and then just left her alone. They did however freak out and hide a bit once she was mobile but they got used to that too.

My sisters one cat does like to sleep by her head, he is also a big cat,  around 25 pounds lol so that is why she takes extra precaution but she would never give her cats away.  If your cat does this as well like I said before just close the door when baby is sleeping. But no reason to get rid your cat. :)

Nooo don't throw out your cat because you're having a baby!!!
If you had these thoughts you shouldn't have committed to a cat in the first place.. :(

Haha no that is a myth for sure..
Sounds absolutely ridicolous..
if you think about it,
Everytime I drink milk, have milk in a glass, cook with milk I should have a cat trying desperately to get to the milk?
Hardly the case.

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and it is SO SAD when owners give their cats away, with little or no care of their future when they are having/expecting a baby..
I find it very irresponsible and ignorant.
Cats are NOT dangerous for babies.

I hope you keep your cat.
And if you decide not to, don't get a cat again.

We have a cat.  She sleeps with us all the time, never in our faces.  I don't think it'll be any different for the baby but I am going to make sure there's no way she can jump up into the crib.

That's not true about cats suffocating babies.  It's an urban myth.

Totally fine.  We have a cat and she never bothered with our daughter when she was born. I'm not worried about this baby at all. They say It can be a good idea to bring something with the baby's scent home just so they can sniff it, but I never did and it never mattered.

Be careful. The cat can smell the milk inside the babies mouth & unintentionally suffocate the baby.

Yes,totally safe. I've had cats for years and I'm on my third child. Some people say you have to be careful and to not let the cat near the baby because it can accidentally suffocate the baby, but I've never had any problems.

Yeah my sister has two cats, she has twins and it's fine. Just make sure when baby is napping to close the door so the cat won't go in there.  Cats like to sleep by their heads and it can suffocate them.
