The safest place doe for a newborn is with mum :)
Keep bedding to minimum. Use Sleeping bags. no covers blankets etc.
Cribs are completely safe for a newborn... I think it just depends on mommy's preference. I will be using a bassinet next to the bed for the first few weeks until I feel comfortable putting him in the crib. Ive read a fan in their room while they sleep helps prevent SUIDS if thats what your concerned about. No bumpers in crib or blankets/toys etc. Just baby in a cozy sleeper pajama and a pacifier if they take it.
I think it is your preference. I will have my daughter in a sleeper for the first month at least. I want her right next to me. The crib is safe, but I will be more comfortable with the sleeper.
Generally speaking, cribs are safer. Of course, some high-end bassinets are well made, like the Arms Reach type, but cribs are made for infants on up and can be used until the child is old enough to refuse to sleep in it, and they are very tightly regulated for safety.
I used a crib from day one with my daughter and plan on doing so again. It's recommended you don't use bumpers in a crib, or use mesh bumpers. And not to put pillows, stuffed animals or extra blankets in there either.
I never had my kids in a crib I don't know why I just didn't I did like the bassinet but that only lasts until 20lbs I think
