Concerns about coming clean at 34 weeks

Please no negative feedback but I'm 34 weeks along and started taking percocets. I took 3, 30 mg for the past few days and I took 2, 30 mg today. I am going to take 1, 30 mg tomorrow, 15 the next and half that the following. I could use every excuse in the book to try to "justify" why I started taking them in the first place and why so much. I won't tho. I shouldnt of taken a strong pain killer but i cant undo what is already done. The point is, I'm scared I'm going to withdrawal and subsequently so will my baby.  When I tell my Ob on Tue, does anyone kno FROM EXPERIENCE if I can get "in trouble" for taking them w/o a prescription?  I kno it's illegal but will there really be a problem if I'm coming to them in honesty for concern about my daughter?  Also, when I go to give birth, I'm sure they will be looking for signs of withdrawal and such but if I ask to keep it private, will they discuss matters in front of my family. I do not want them to kno about any of this. My sister will be in the delivery room. Also will they test the meconium & if so, they may find marijuana (I smoked once), will CPS get involved after they see that along with the opiates?

I think your best plan is to talk to your doctor. I was prescribed percocets in my 2nd trimester. I only took 1 back then. They are still asking if I am taking any. If they know what to look for, they can make sure your baby has the best options available. As for CPS becoming involved, because you plan on being upfront and honest, I would like to say that they will try and help you. The goal is to keep children in the parents home as long as they are safe. With your goal to be clean (I am assuming after baby is born as well), I don't see why CPS would not work with you.  Good luck and stay strong!

Before u stop completely talk to ur ob..the baby will withdraw. You can keep it private in a sense of family but CPS is going to get involved i think ur ob has to report it eapecially since u r 34 weeks. I took percs occ before i got pregnant but i never took them pregnant so i dont know what it reslly doea to the baby but it can be good at all. But where i live if they find anything in ur blood and the babys you will have to deal with dcf ( dept. Of children and families) theyll probably just check up on you for a while to make sure your clean and the baby is ok.  I think if they find anythinf in ur system then theyll test the baby. Can i ask why you started taking them this late in pregnancy? You should really not take more than 10 mg a day so u dont withdraw but try your hardest not take more than that. Shes almost here so you can do it for her. Oh and you dont have to tell them where you go it.

I took them for really bad tooth pain. I agree i took way too much. It was the addict in me. My dental insurance finally kicked in so I'm taking care of that tomorrow.  I will do everything in my power to make this situation right, I just don't want my family knowing anything.  Which might be hard bc my sister, like I said will be my delivery coach and I moved in with my grandparents for help with baby.

You can do this! Stay strong and think of what's best for your little one. Sending well wishes your way.

It's good that you recognize you have a problem now. Good. Luck w cutting back. The hospital and dr cannot share any information unless you give them permission, if they do, it's a violation of hipaa. Talk to your dr, they may get frustrated w you, but could also offer help, maybe even some form of rehab.

Drink lots and lots of water to flush it out for ypu and her. Good luck

I'm a foster mom and of course I don't know with all situations but I've had 2 baby placements and both were removed from bio mom. I currently have a baby boy he is 3.5 months old now but mom smoked weed. Your confronting your addiction and that's great...talk with your doctor so they can help. And don't give up, keep your chin up. Do it for your beauty. Good luck momma.

Ok Im a former drug addict, quit way before I got pregnant.  I have lots of friends who have been addicted to the dreaded pain killers. How Long have you been Taking them? Honestly whats the dosage you take per day and how many times do you take it. Please be honest, I do not judge, Its a drug addicts way to lie about this for fear of What ppl think. From that I can tell you if you need to go to a detox centre aka rehab. Quitting on your own and slowly cutting back bad idea, since your pregnant you need to be medically supervised bc nyour blood pressure for one will rise, withdrawls I dont mean to scare you are not going to be fun1 even if your midly addicted they will still be bad. Thats speaking from watching my friends go through it in rehab, on their own and Ive been midly addicted myself. Also they need to put you on a detox medication. Yes if you tell your doctor cps will be involved, when you give birth, they will do a drug test on the baby. If she has drugs in her system they will place her with the closest relative, and you are going to have to take drug classes to raise your awareness and other classes to get your child back. Not only that but they will check in on you afterwards and drug test you. I know this bc once again I have friends in the narcotics anonymous who have struggled to get their kids back and some that were addicted while pregnant. This is going to be a hard road but youve got a baby who needs you and you have to stay strong. You have to seek recovery and join na program if this is an issue.  I wish you luck, msg me if you ever need someone to talk to.

If you are on government assistance yes they will drug test you automatically. Be open and honest with your doctor. It will be up to the hospitals care person to get cps involved also the may put the baby on methadone.and yes the baby will withdrawal even if its cigarettes.again please don't stop cold Turkey. Be honest.

Def good you're facing the problem, yes CPS can get involved if the babies muconium shows drugs and no hippa does not protect against that, the hospital legally has to notify them if drugs show up. My mom is the director of the department of job and family services for her county and has to send people to take babies for drugs a lot, but I do know they do everything to keep the children with the parents/family.

Thanku everyone for being so nice and so supportive!!! It's reassuring me that I can do this :-)   I don't want to get on any other drug to ween off, I'm hoping my Ob will help me taper completely off.  Does anyone kno if 4 weeks off pain killers, will baby withdrawal at birth?
Avatar universal
Ok bad new if you slowly ween off of them you will still withdrawl which means high bp, Basic herion withdrawls also. You are putting the baby at risk with that, you may have to detox with medication or close observation in a detox hospital. As soon as your done with  withdrawls so should your baby. There is no way to avoid it unless you use medication. Either way you and her will go through it. Im sorry your having yo go through this, this is a very very serious drug. Please talk to your ob and be careful.

When one posts something on a public forum they are putting themselves up for judgement. Obviously everyones concern is for the unborn child. Jlynn please please please talk to your dr ASAP. Im certain at 34wks there will still be traces of what youve taken. Good luck to the baby. Stay positive.

If you really care and it seems like you do, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible nothing is worst than making a baby suffer. Praying for you and the baby

I was in states custody bc of my mom but for sure cps will get involved but the main goal of the state is to keep children in their mothers care. im sure they will work with u. ull prob have to take a drug adiction class and parenting classed as well. my mom had to do it when she had her kids but since she didnt do what she wad supposed to i got taken away. best of luck to u and baby.

It takes alot of courage to say what you did. I would seemingly talk to your doctor, they will and should be able to help you. I believe in your strength to quit. If not for yourself quit for your child :).

You need to talk to your doctor before stopping anything, and before delivery. There is a chance that if your baby were born with withdrawal symptoms like shaking, nervousness, etc. that they may not let you go home with the baby. I'm not trying to worry you, but my aunt used to work in the nursery/nicu of the hospital in my area, and her job was to check on the newborns, and she would have to contact doctors and let them know of babies with withdrawal symptoms and she was forced to make phone calls resulting in mothers not getting to have their babies. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but if you talk to your doctor now, they could give you the best advice on what they believe will happen, like if the baby would withdrawal or have problems, and what the hospital would do, etc.

Good luck, I know it isn't the easiest thing to go through, if you need anyone to vent to, feel free to message me. I've not been in your position with taking meds while pregnant, but I did several years prior to being pregnant have an addiction to percocet.

Tell your Dr the truth, no matter how much it hurts you to say it. I'm sure you and baby will be fine. But at least your Obgyn is aware if anything happens. Depending on state to state whether they do drug screening. Ex: Iowa you fail for weed they take your baby til you are seen fit. Nebraska on the other hand never heard of them doing such a thing..nor did my kids ever get taken because of weed in system. Babies are a lot stronger & protected inside you than you think!- I just found out I'm 22 weeks pregnant!!! Had no clue, dang depo shot and a false neg At planned parenthood. found out wayyy late , with my 4th child. I didn't know to slow down or stop doing pills etc. God has a plan already in set, make a conscious effort and try your hardest to slow down &/stop and what will be will be in time. The best of luck to you & yours!

everyone on here is freaking out but really my sister was prescribed percocets most of her last tri mester with her middle child cuz her pelvis slipped. The main ingredient in percs is acetaminophen, which is tylenol, using them occasionally shouldn't hurt the baby. Which is why drs will prescribe them to pregnant women. I dont think you took them long enough to make thew baby suffer withdrawals. What they are concerned about is long term use of opiates will cause the baby to be addicted.

I would definitely talk to your ob before weaning down. It sounds like you might be weaning yourself too fast so be careful. You will probably be asked to see another doctor to help you. Both you and your baby will need to be monitored for withdrawal symptoms now and once she is born. CPS will get involved bit like other posts said it is just to make sure the child is safe. Their main goal is to keep the child with the parents as long as it is safe to do so. Your doctor cannot tell your family and friends without your permission. It is the law. Be prepared that your baby will possibly be in the NICU when first born and will most likely be in the hospital longer than normal to be monitored. You will probably be asked to go to therapy too. Good luck! This will not be easy but you can do it. And congratulations!

Your baby is going to have harder withdrawls at birth if you dont stop now...you might have to go to a methadone clinic until baby arrives.... if your child is born with ANY type of alcohol/drug in her blood CPS will be involved.... Cps took my sister away 2 days after birth because she had high levels of whatever my mother was doing...and my best friend is facing charges because hrr baby was born 9 weeks early and had marijuana in her system. We are not here to judge nobody knows your full story but nownis your chance to change for your baby.
