Down Syndrome Testing

Hello. I was tested for down syndrome (baby), and I just received a call from the nurse. The test came back higher than expected. They are sending me out for more testing... What does this mean? I've been crying for an hour, please give me some information.

I was told the same thing when I took this test but mine was higher for Trisomy 18, which is a most always fatal disorder. These test are known for a high false positive rate. They told me my chances of him having it was 1 in 13. They will send you for a more detailed ultrasound to look for markers of DS & offer you an amnio. I did the Level 2 ultrasound & baby is fine. My doctor only recommends the amnio if you plan to terminate if it's positive, because there is a risk of misarriage with the amnio. I chose not to have it. I'm 30+1 now & have had 5 more ultrasounds & baby is healthy & happy. I know it does no good for others to say don't worry beause I know I did, know that there is a high chance the test is wrong.

Don't worry. I agree with everyone above! My best friend was told the same thing during her first pregnancy, and after several expensive tests/Montgomery of worry and agony, she later delivered a healthy baby girl. BTW, I have a 3 yr old with down syndrome who is doing well and thriving. We didn't know until he was born, and Thank God for that, it was easier to digest. Here if you need anything.

That's why we opted out of those tests...we were afraid we'd worry our way through the pregnancy.  We will love this baby no matter what....maybe looking at it that way will help you?  But a preliminary test isn't conclusive so try to stay calm until they do the additional  testing. I know how you feel.  I have to have some tests done in my 7th month for abnormal, possibly cancerous cells....its hard to keep my mind from straying there but I try.

I wouldn't worry just yet.... I am guessing you had a blood test?? It is only a screening test so it can not be positive or negative.
