Fetal Seizures

Has anyone had what felt to them like their fetus was having seizures in the womb? This isn't something that is well researched as it is typically brushed off as hiccups because it's the "unknown", and what research has been done had negative outcomes.

However, I've heard of women being brushed off and then have their babies have a couple seizures (they grow out of it) and then their doctor takes them seriously and asks about fetal movement.

A typical fetal seizure is said to happen over minutes rather than just random quick movement suh as restless leg twitching, and can happen over a longer period of time like 30 minutes with breaks in between. The fetus will then be quiet afterwards. Usually not felt until the latter part of the third trimester and diagnosed around 35 weeks.

This has happened to me twice now where it has lasted 1.5 hours and they're still trying to figure out why as we know it is not hiccups and she does not have a nuchal cord. Going to ask about fetal seizures today because if she does have them, I'll need to give birth in a different city with an NICU.

It is scary when you read the only case report on it! But it seems like plenty of women have had babies that out grow them pretty fast. Hopefully they do more research on fetal epilepsy! My doctor said to take a multi b vitamin just in case it's a B6 deficiency as I do have issues with my vitamins to be on the safe side.

Since it started I stopped taking my zantac and diovol every day (gallstones), and she hasn't done it yet this week. So we think that might have been another factor in it. But we've ruled out the usual things such as food and the cord. Hoping it doesn't happen again, but they will probably keep us an extra day or two to observe her when she's born.

I'm so happy I stuck with it and kept asking and got a second opinion. It seems like too often FTMs are brushed off.
Thanks for the prayers as well!

I had several movement "episodes" like that during my third trimester, but I don't know if her heart rate changed during then since they all happened at home. My daughter was born a week ago and had no problems and needed no NICU time. Hope that's a little reassuring. But still keep your doctor in the loop.

My baby had what felt like seizures when I was around 28 weeks, Im currently 34 weeks. For me it was like seeing a person have an epileptic seizure but instead I felt the baby move like that in the womb - so definitely some kind of seizure. No one can move that fast and shaky by its own will. It was scary and I google it and that just made my worries worse. It didn't last too long, I have no conception of how long though, maybe a few minutes, 10 I don't know. Since she acted normal later that day and I haven't felt it since I've forgotten to mention it to my OB.

Thanks. I saw my doctor this morning and shae said it's a possibility, but the only way to know for sure is to catch it while it's happening. We live out of town so of she does it again hopefully we'll be in town already! Other than that she's looking good and growing and her fluid level is good.

That sounds scary. You're in my prayers. Sounds like you've done enough research to definitely ask your OB about it. Hopefully it's not it and something less concerning.

Then why ask for advice if you already spoke with drs ps in your post it states your going to ask about it today yet your comment states you already have a drs opinion. A tad contradicting. Just saying.

You have been on my mind and in my prayers! I have looked up and talked to my friend who's an RN. She said usually it's either something going on with the cord, or intrauterus seizures. Either way they keep you in the hospital under constant observation until either they know for sure what the problem is or you are safe to deliver. From what I have read and  heard if it is seizures it generally goes away after birth. I pray you find answers, I can only imagine how stressed you are.

Yes, if it lasts a few seconds. Not for a half hour or even longer. Heart rate is also not typical after it happens and shows signs of slight distress. Heart rate is usually 138-180 but after this happens it'll be 116-197.

Doctors do not think it's the nerves because of these factors.
