Flu shot

my edd is Jan 19 , and it will be flu season. I'm conflicted on getting the flu shot. Does anyone know the pros and cons of the flu shot and If they're getting it ?

Sorry jahawr89 but the CDC, FDA and vaccine manufacturer Flumist disagrees. There are insufficient studies to show that it's safe during pregnancy and so it is not recommended.

I refused it and my doctor didn't care or give me a hard time. I've always gotten sick from the flu shot. I didn't want to get sick while being pregnant also. It's up to you what you want to do. I personally wouldn't get it and didn't.

I've researched vaccines a lot, and while the others seem pretty decent (except whooping cough vaccine which is so ineffective it barely seems worth it... They really need a new one made!), the flu shot is easily the most sketchy and rubbishy.

There are a few studies in various countries that showed flu shot recipients caught the vaccine flu strains less than unvaxxed, but then got 4 times as many other respiratory illnesses than unvaxxed and were more likely to catch the flu the next year.

And while every doctor and nurse I talk to is adamant it's impossible, every third person I talk to seems to get a really bad flu after the vaccine (especially their first time getting it). I have never been as sick in my life as I was after getting the shot, nearly 6 weeks of intense flu. Never getting one again. Much prefer to get a normal week long flu than some unexplained 6 week long reaction.

Anyway, if they guessed the strains right for this year's vaccine batch, then you'll be protected against the main flus going around, and if that's really important to you, then maybe you'll want to get it. Obviously it's not that important to me but there are still some people that may be more at risk (maybe depending on health, or exposure to viruses at work etc) and it's better for them to get it. The vaccine has its place, but that place is not my body!

The spray is not safe for pregnant women, it is a weak version of the live virus. You can only have the shot, which is not live and will certainly not give you the flu. Please don't ask for the spray!

I had just gotten pregnant during last flu season this past winter and my dr actually recommended the shot. I opted out only because Ive had bad luck with it and when Ive gotten the shot Ive still gotten sick. This year I didnt get it, but never got sick either ( but they also said the flu shots weren't very effective this year a bunch of ppl I know got the shot and still became ill.)

You can ask for the spray instead. It's not as effective as the shot, but it's intended for children and pregnant women.

I would wait until nearer the time before getting it. Each flu jab is different, depending on the strain that is around at that time. Plus it makes you get the flu as well, so avoid that for as long as possible! I had a chest infection for 15 days over Christmas after mine! Not fun!

I had the shot and it was fine. I wouldn't normally get it but it was recommended as it's flu season now in Australia and I'm due. It can make you feel a bit off but nothing awful- my whooping cough shot was sore, this wasn't! It covers you for the most common strains going around so you are much less likely to get sick and pass it on to bub.

Any other vaccine I've been all for getting it. The flu shot, however, seems to be hit or miss because the flu is constantly changing and I've known more people to have side effects from it. I don't get it and just try to steer clear of anyone who seems sick and wash my hands often. I can't remember the last time I had the flu. If you are prone to sickness you might still want to get it just in case. Most doctors will suggest that you do.
